Winter Sowing - 2nd Big Reveal! Growing Vegetable Seedlings from Seeds in the Snow
Tips, Tricks
Want to learn Veggie Winter Sowing? (growing gorgeous, hardened, organic veggie, fruit and herb seedlings out in the snow or cold outdoors) Come join my official Veggie Winter Sowing club called: Winter Sowing - (Vegetable Gardening with Sheryl Mann) http://www.facebook.com/groups/WinterSowing.VegGardeningwithSheryl In this video, see my 2nd Winter Sowing Big Reveal! Growing healthy, hardened vegetable seedlings from seeds in the snow or cold weather outdoors. Does winter sowing work? Winter sowing is a fairly new technique where you plant your veggie seeds in milk jugs or other similar plastic containers all taped up. You set them outside in the snow in the middle of January or February! They hibernate all winter. They expand and contract with the changes in temperature and humidity. And then they germinate in the spring outside into gorgeous seedlings, ready to be planted in containers, raised beds or in the ground. This stops you from having to grow seeds under a grow light indoors and have your house taking over by seedlings! I had very successful seedling growth with this method. In this video, I show you all the vegetable plants I grew out in the snow. This is My Big Reveal! Hi, Sheryl. Can you use a regular, larger
cold frame to do this? -
I love this and will try this! Thanks for all the info..

Happy New Year!! I'm eager to get started. I'm in zone 7 and can't wait to get seeds started for the spring. I have a very small grow light and no more space in doors. Is it too early?? I was thinking I could start some brussel sprouts and onions since they take so long to grow. When do you put your greenhouses out?

Love your voice and excitement.

Do you transplant these?

I am so glad I found you Sheryl! I will definitely be employing this technique next winter, Its 3/15/2016 so I already got stuff under lights in my utility room, I am also a zone 5 outside -south of Chicago, so, I know this will work for us too! Can't wait to share you videos with my hubby-and avid gardening partner. I'm using my son's account right now, I am Ms. Hope of "Wild Edges Farm"-that's what I call my 300square foot backyard garden. I love to learn new practical gardening approaches, so thank you! Ms. Hope

We live in fairbanks, AK and decided to try this method. What we call breakup is just around the cornor. We decided to do the normal grow lights for most of our plants BUT have 3 outside using the winter sow method. Our March is probably equal to yalls January. If we have just one success we will start collecting jugs to try a bigger batch next year!

Awesome info! I am going to start saving containers for next year!
I live in New England in zone 6, so we get a true, harsh winter complete with snow like you do. It will be so much easier to do it this way instead of indoors where my cat knocks my start pots off the windowsills and eats the baby plants. -
you know how people sometimes leave a fan on to help seedlings adjust to the normal stress of wind. Well have you experienced weak seedlings? Or are they able to handle it?
-
I am definitely gonna try that it looks awesome I also live in Ohio
-
This is so inspirational, Sheryl!
I'll try this method too this year - although it might be a bit late already. Anyway I'm hoping to get really tough plants :-)
Thanks for teaching. P -

After seing your near frost experience i decided to double my container so they can stay in longer this meant using two gallons to create one higher container hope It turns out fine once spring time comes around

Just found your video while I was watching another one. I am so excited about this.I am definitely going for it. I was worried about getting a good harvest from my beef steak tomatoes. Last year was bad I planted them too late. Thanks for sharing. I am in London uk. Will this work?
