Another Great Video Brad! It is really hard to think about this stuff at this time of year. I really dig the binder Been thinking about getting one crated as well with a slot for seed packages so we know what we did last year and make notes on how well they did. Thanks for sharing!

I used the Grow Veg app for the first time last year for my garden and it was a life saver! It helped me plan out all my beds and even keeps a calendar to show when to plant stuff. Before that I was using spreadsheets and paper. My gardens before that weren't really big enough to require any planning but my new house has a much bigger garden space. Now the hard part is trying to narrow down all the stuff I want to plant. :p

Fall/Winter fertilization/compost/mulch and ground turning over. Fall/spring rains and winter snow melt water pushes fertilizer down into spring soil. Then spring seeding. Greater production. No spring fertilization ...

Thanks for the great tips. I'm gonna pick me up one of those cards.

I really like to turn to the local universities for information about vegetable and fruit breeds that are best for your local area. They often have easy tables of information online that tell you when you plant, what breeds are suited for the local area (pest resistance, climate tolerant, etc) and of course it is free.

I use a Free online program called Smart Gardener. www.smartgardener.com. You can create your garden, pick your plants, enter your zip and how many people you are feeding. It will tell you how many to plants to plant and when to plant. It will also tell you what not to plant near each other, etc. I Love it. They will be changing the name here shortly and have some neat stuff you can do to. Haven't looked at the new site yet. Guess I should get crackin' on that. :)

Lots of great tips Brad. Love the binder idea and that Clyde's guide thingy. I really need to do not only a garden binder but also a home binder too.
-
Yep, I have a binder with plant names, dates plated, dates when they started to get picked, and dates for planting successive crops so we have string beans, French carrots, beets ready to harvest weekly, and amount of water needed, if any ( I do www.backtoedenfilm.com) along with yield per plants. Each year I plant something new so new vegetables are introduced into our diet. I do plant a lot of zucchini and crook neck squash because we love the blossoms and it takes 6 per person when we make tempura and a good dozen when we use them in stir fry, salad etc. I also budget for bales of straw (not hay) late summer which I use to cover the fall garden 2-3 feet deep as insulation so I have fresh vegetables all winter long. And I also plant vegetables that may need drip irrigation in the flower beds because my Back To Eden garden works for 90% of the vegetables I grow, but some things need a weekly drip of water for 15 minutes.

Here is a downloadable guide similar to the Clyde's guide. It's from VA Tech, but could be used for other states if you know your frost free dates. You might want to check your own state Extension Service. I also have fruit tree spray guides that I've downloaded from VA Tech.

We use farmers almanac, I have used it for several years now and it has been a big help. My husband says even if you grow to much you can always bless animals . Do you all ever sell your crop? We sell small batches in our community, just a little extra income. gardens are a lot of work but oh good you feel when it starts coming in, I miss stringing beans, that is my fave thing to do. My daughter got stung by a pack saddle this summer, just fyi, with your kids working in the corn.{pack saddle is not the correct name] but what we call 'em,lol. tell your wife I will be copying her notebook on the garden!!! Thanks
