Why Your Hair Won't Grow in a Protective Style + 5 Tips
Tips, Tricks
Hey guys! So I mentioned a few months ago that protective styles can be the DEVIL! I've have a few requests to elaborate so here it is. The key idea is to not forget about your real hair. This is what works for me but if you have any other tips/tricks, please share them below so that we can all benefit from them. I have planning on doing protectives styles this winter so this video is a great start to this series! How I care for my hair in braids (during +- 4 weeks):
I moisturize (spritz) my scalp and the length of my hair using coconut oil:water mix (lukewarm) (1:5) every morning and every night before going to bed.
My hair is always soft and doesn't go dry.
I wash it once a week and restore moisture by spraying warm coconut oil (over the hair and NOT the scalp) after cleanse. The following day my hair would still be pretty okay on moisture level so I leave it alone. But the next day, I repeat the above steps. -
I keep my braids in for 2 or 3 months and my hair is just fine. I still wash, deep condition etc.

Great video! and I will be subbing. I was every Sunday and alternate between low maintenance and protectives styles. pretty much every other week. Like you said, it allows my scalp and hair to not only breath but to be receptive to the moisture I'm putting in it. TFS

Never mind, I found the link!! 😊😊

Do you have a tutorial on this style you are wearing in this video?
-
try yarn lots or braids for long protective style yarn isn't heavy Eben if washed

Anyone out there that can only leave a protective style in for 2-3 weeks? I have 4a/b hair but for some reason my hair gets frizzy quickly and my edges get damaged even when the braids are loose. Are twist out and braid outs better than box braids, twist etc?
-
I love your video, very professional, right to the point. Great presentation, good look, and very good information. 👍

I think it all depends who makes your hair if they make it to tight it would break your hair but if they do it right your hair will grow
-
Why are you the only video "explaining" why ortective styles don't work
-
I LOVE your videos! thank you

I don't think twist outs and braid outs are low manipulation styles. You manipulate your hair daily. That's just regular manipulation. If those are low manipulation then what style isn't protective or low manipulation?

Great video. I've had my braids in since April 2 and it's May 10. I wanna keep them in until the end of May so I moisture and treat my hair as usual doing a deep condition on wash day which is every other week. I exercise 6 days a week so I make sure to clean my braids after exercise with warm water and oil it properly. I have redone some braids where the braid was slipping and pulling so that helps me check my own hair. I'm definitely goung to use some of these tips.

6-8 weeks is ok... I wouldn't say over that. I had my first sew in in for 6 weeks and I got about a inch of growth. I might get another one but right now I have in a cornrow bun

I had in micro thin twist braids in my 4c hair for 6 months. I washed my braids 3 times during the time and only oiled it twice. When I took my braids out I had a ridiculous amount of growth I couldn't believe it. Yes it was tangled but with hrs of careful detangling using my fingers, I had minimal breakage.

You're awesome !!! :-)

I definitely recommend taking care of your hair underneath. My braider always compliments me on how clean my scalp is when I go in for touch ups. I can usually keep a braided style about 3 months with a touch-up at the 6 wk. point, but I take very VERY good care of my hair while in braids. She also laughs at me because I'm so overprotective of my edges, but I have a big head so I can't play the no edges game. Good luck to you all!

Not to be rude but when you speak on natural hair you need to do all your homework on the facts first! Some things you stated were not correct!

thanks for the lovely video. How did you do your make-up?
