We always keep one to two plants to allow one zucchini to grow to save seed for the next years garden....

That is my rule of thumb with most plants, KEEP them picked. :) It makes such a difference as to the production. Especially true for beans, peas, and cukes too. I have a garden away from where I live and the last time I visited, there was a zucchini which got bigger than I thought one could possibly grow - it looked like a watermelon. lol !!!
