What does it mean when you find your plant's leaves are curling? Sometimes, on young plants, we see an odd situation where the leaf curls up into a tube or it rolls over, showing the underside of the leaf to the light. Why is it doing this? When the petal rolls up, it is shading itself in order to reduce the amount of light that is striking the photosynthesis area. By reducing the amount of light striking the photosynthesis area, the plant has a reduced need for water. Why is this happening? Sometimes, we have a young plant that we have just transplanted. We’ve taken it away from its gentle fluorescent lighting and now we’ve put it under HID lighting, which is more intense and demands a greater rate of transpiration. Since the plant is young, it hasn’t established an aggressive root mass yet. Thankfully, this issue is not a huge concern, as sometimes this happens when the above ground growth is faster paced than the root development, so the roots cannot take up as much water as needed under HID lighting, which is why plant feels the need to protect itself. This issue is an easy fix and is not serious; simply back off on your lighting by moving the light further from the canopy and generally your plants will grow out of the problem.
