What Causes Leaf Curl? - The Garden Sage 10
Tips, Tricks
What does it mean when you find your plant's leaves are curling? Sometimes, on young plants, we see an odd situation where the leaf curls up into a tube or it rolls over, showing the underside of the leaf to the light. Why is it doing this? When the petal rolls up, it is shading itself in order to reduce the amount of light that is striking the photosynthesis area. By reducing the amount of light striking the photosynthesis area, the plant has a reduced need for water. Why is this happening? Sometimes, we have a young plant that we have just transplanted. We’ve taken it away from its gentle fluorescent lighting and now we’ve put it under HID lighting, which is more intense and demands a greater rate of transpiration. Since the plant is young, it hasn’t established an aggressive root mass yet. Thankfully, this issue is not a huge concern, as sometimes this happens when the above ground growth is faster paced than the root development, so the roots cannot take up as much water as needed under HID lighting, which is why plant feels the need to protect itself. This issue is an easy fix and is not serious; simply back off on your lighting by moving the light further from the canopy and generally your plants will grow out of the problem. Thanks for this information. I just transplanted a clone and am having issues with the leaves curling in like a taco and twisting. Makes sense it's trying to shade itself. I backed my light up and gonna let my medium dry out for awhile. Hopefully fixes itself in the next couple days or so

I noticed my plants were doing very good a week ago, then after I put in my CO2 producer they started looking bad, they aren't dead or anything but they are really rolling over and yellowing and curling, especially the taller ones, I was giving them 14 hours of daylight and now switched it too 12 12, and raised my light, Now all I can do is just take a look in a few days and see what happens, I also did make the mistake of thinking they were not getting enough water and fed them twice as much water, but as I was thinking that, you just mentioned about the roots rate of growth compared too the size of plant, and it seems its only happening on the taller central plants directly under the light, the ones farther out are looking very green and healthy, at least now I know it is something that is minor problem and can be fixed, Outdoor is just SOOOO much easier than indoor, somany problems with an indoor grow setup, especially in a house with carpet. Thx for the video man, the last one I watched was like 30 minutes long and didn't give me much information besides, they are dying...the guy was doing all these water tests and crap and half of it I could barely keep up with, this was simple and easy to understand.

What a relief to hear. My san fran. heirloom tomatoes are only in need of relocation! Thanks for the tips!

I'm using led lights with 5000k and it's new for me. I've noticed the leaves doing this and couldn't figure it out for the life of me. so either my leds are too bright, or just the fact the watering schedule I have is too much. is it possible to just leave them be and hopefully let the water escape or should I repot them? thank you

this helped me a lot! I was all worried about my plant!

Thank you! You just saved an entire generation of meringue trees. Luckily, they were in pots, so all I had to was move them into the shade. -- I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

I'm having this issue right now. I was thinking of putting them into bigger pots(5Gal), taking clones as I do, is it advisable to do this at this time? Plants are about 6wks into vegg, first time grower,,,,HELP!!!!!

Thank you so much for your great video. I am a new overly concerned dwarf banana plant grower. And, yes, I did just transplant both of my 4-month-old plants. And, yes, they've gone from indoors to out in the bold Pacifica, CA sun, all day and all night. Their leaves even folded.
Now, I moved them into the shade and I'll take your advice of letting them dry out. Five days ago, I fed them Maxsea organic kelp food in water and I had used organic garden soil with the natural foam pellets to fluff up the soil. They both are still growing new leafs. Normally, their leafs are perfect. Am I killing them with love? -
Outstanding presentation- how about leaf curl on adult (trees) Lemon, same concept and most likely over-watering? I live in hot climate!
