Growing watermelon used to be intimidating. If you are like me, you worry if there is enough space to grow them. Then I ran across the heirloom 'Sugar Baby' variety. The size of the watermelon is not giant so it felt easier. Giving them a try, I was surprised to find out that it is possible to grow them without too much worry of making sure the soil was right. Year 3 into growing watermelon, I thought I would try other varieties like: 'Yellow Mountain Sweet,' 'Klondike Blue Ribbon,' and 'Moon & Stars.' For the Gardens Across America Project, they sent a 'Yixuan Sweet' for me to sprout and grow. Here are the things that I have learned about growing watermelon: 1. They like warm weather. 2. They will make only one fruit per vine. 3. When the weather is not above 70 degrees AND when the plants do not look filled-out, remove the forming melons.
