Using red mulch to landscape a garden.

Hii rathke 19-
I have to admit that I was concerned about that. I tend to avoid as many creepy colors and chemical as I can. But what the color comes from is actually iron. I did notice that the plants darkened in color after being watered in a few times. So I guess they enjoyed the extra minerals. Mulch for the vegetable garden. usually that is a fairly open option. The only negative thing about mulch in a vegetable garden is that its a perfect shelter for earwigs, slugs and other pests. Some people swear by straw or alfalfa hay. You will be constantly pulling up hay sprouts though. If you have a small garden. I suggest shredded cardboard! I will do a video on this soon. I learned to utilize my old boxes and brown paper years ago before I had a home, and was patio gardening at my apartment. I shredded cardboard in a 15 page cross shredder. Soaked it in a bucket of water. And filled it in generously around the tops of my potted plants. On really hot days. This not only saved water but saved the plants from drying out. This year I have used the same technique in my raised beds. The shredded cardboard is actually quite attractive too. It looks like a moss. I have put several people right in front of it. And asked them what it was. And they were shocked when I told them it was old boxes! lol! You have to pile it in at lease 3 inches for maximum efficiency. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

So what's the dye in that red mulch? And what kind of mulch do your recommend for vegetable gardens, especially for tomato plants?
