I found finding clean straw is bit tough in Okanagan. I'm using ornamental grass. They are everywhere in Okanagan landscape, especially urban setting. They are usually pretty clean of chemicals, and easy to remove seeds. The only catch is you need to source them in fall when people are cutting down.

Thanks! Good stuff!

Good information. Where do you get your straw from? For wood mulch, I've used the chipped "Christmas tree" mulch from the pile at the East landfill. I've never used it near any plants we'd be eating though - any thoughts on whether that would be safe to use?

awesome garden ! was wondering if using pine needles and pine cones as mulch would have any effect on PH or any other unwanted issues ?

I love how the kiddos are actively involved in the garden. My 4 (ages 5 and under) are as well. It's so important to teach our next generation about food production
