Egg shells can be used in the vegetable garden for a range of purposes including ensuring that calcium is available in the soil and as a deterrent to some pests.

I use to add them straight into the garden until a few years ago. I was told by an organic farmer friend of mine that salmonella bacteria from an unbaked egg shell can contaminate the compost or soil so I bake them at 350 for about 15 minutes before I add them just as a precaution.
