When you think of gardening, the picture of a big yard or lot full of plants would be the first thing that would come into your mind. There are people who are fortunate enough to have enough space to fulfill their gardening dreams and there are urban dwellers that usually live in apartment buildings, townhouses, and other quite cramped living conditions with no space to garden at all who also would love to garden if given an opportunity. And this is where the concept of urban gardening comes into play. If you live in a city like me, you probably have more or less the same set up as I do – small living room, small kitchen, a tiny bedroom, and if lucky enough, you would have a small balcony to go along with your cosy dwelling space. It would be quite impossible to set up the garden of my dreams. Fortunately, for urbanites like us we cab also do some gardening by using stuff that could be just lying around the house. Gardening Using Planters, Pots, and Recycled Containers urban gardening Who says you cannot grow vegetables if you live in a small place? The solution is to plant your vegetables on planters, pots, and recycled items like used PET bottles or old water containers; you can even recycle those detergent and chlorine containers (just make sure you clean them thoroughly). Afterwards, you can go to any garden centre and buy some garden soil and seeds. Urban gardening is really not that hard. Going back to the planters, pots, and recycled containers; it’s your choice on what you want to use. Of course, the planters and pots would be nicer to look at and will help with the aesthetic part of your urban garden. If you are more of save the environment and recycle kind of person, the aforementioned recycled containers are as good as the planters and pots. What plants or vegetables would be ideal for your garden? The answer to this would depend on your end goal – do you want an ornamental or organic/vegetable urban garden? If you want ornamental plants, here are a few suggestions: - Norfolk Alpine Pine - Peperomia - Chinese Evergreen - Dracaena - Dieffenbachia - Snake Plant - Arrowhead Vine - Roses and other flowering plants you can find at your local garden centre When it comes to planting vegetables, here are some of our suggestions: - Tomatoes - Eggplants - Carrots - Onions - Garlic - Peppers There are actually a lot of vegetables that you can grow on planters or pots and still not take up much space. Just estimate how much space you can spare for the planters or pots and then start your gardening tasks.
