how often do you have to do this?
-
I'm cutting mine back to 5 feet from 15 feet. Getting too old for it even with the electric pole hedge trimmer. I'll let it grow to 7 feet and stay on the ground and not go up and down the ladder. Better things to do, party time!

Just practise with long sweeping motions working one end to the other. Keep the motion parallel to the tree
-
Thanks Alex, the trimmer just gives it a nice clean finish and promotes new growth, over time the hedge gets thicker .
-
Also how do you get the front so flat?
-
Nice one mate. What's the idea after you use the hedge trimmer ? Are you just cutting fuzz or cutting off specific bits for better growth . Cheers

Hi i planted them at 24 inches they were 5 feet tall and i used miracle grow for first couple of years
-
what spacing was used when these were planted? i just planted mine 6 months ago and just to let other growers of this plant that using 16,16,16, fertilizer lightly on the side of the tree makes these trees nice and green, and work it in the ground, man what a difference, nice and deep green vs yellowish look

Great job Kevin. I have individual Emerald Green Arborvitae in my backyard. I wish I wouldn't have mixed them up with alternative Quaking Aspen (nightmare sucker issues) and Bloodgood Japanese Maples. The hedge looks much more tidy. Mine have grown to about 15 feet and in the last year it's become noticeable they need to be shaped and topped. (separating at the top). I'm thinking of making them into cylinders instead of pyramidal in shape. I believe they have enough bulk to do this, considering I'd be losing a lot of tree at the top which will surely grow back out.
