TRG 2016: Planting Fall Garlic Quickly and Easily - Plant a Few Cloves!
Tips, Tricks
Garlic can take the cold and is often planted in the Fall in many areas. It will over-winter freezes and snow nicely. I show you how I plant common store bought garlic in Maryland Zone 7. Typically I get it in the ground in mid October. However, if the ground can be worked and you can plant it below your freeze level... you can still plant it. Check out my vegetable gardening blog: The Rusted Garden. It is filled with garden information, videos, pictures, seed catalogs and seeds & things I sell. http://www.therustedgarden.blogspot.com Join My FaceBook Gardening Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/262500970619372/

Do you water the garlic cloves in after planting them?

I threw some garlic into the ground a few weeks ago and I've already got some green shoots about 10" tall. Is that normal? My soil is pretty nitrogen rich (chickens) and I added a sprinkle of bone meal...have I sped up the process? We've also had some milder weather with good rain here in zone 8b recently (we just had our first frost last night). Do I just leave the garlic be until they turn yellow? Thanks!

I planted organic softneck garlic from the grocery store. $8 for 12 bulbs, much cheaper than the $15 for 3 bulbs commonly seen from online suppliers. Let's see if they grow.

I planted some Elephant Garlic I am getting green stalks in a pot and in the ground.I am in Louisiana zone 9 so you say that by spring time I should have cloves of garlic. I ll see what happens by spring.

I forgot to get my garlic in too, maybe this week. Nice video Gary.

Nice one - garlic is a little difficult to grow in the subtropics but it's interesting to see the time of year you plant it in a colder climate is still around the same time as us - I plant mine in autumn for harvest in late spring before the heat and humidity of summer hits.

Thanks for sharing Gary. Best wishes Bob.

hi Gary I'm wondering if your garlic ever suffers from rust and if it does do you use anything to help combat it?
