Specimen: Jacaranda mimosifolia (Jacaranda) Major abuse: Recent construction/redesign/and paving of street. Disturbed site reduced to a small square plot to survive and grow, excessive base of trunk buried. Excessive pruning without planning or training to help grow into a graceful habit. Possible additional factors: No wind protection. Planted 1 minute walking distance from beach/ocean. High vehicle traffic street. Jacaranda notoriously dislikes pruning. Signs of stress: Lots of epicormic growth on pruned branches and next to the cuts, many of these shoots (lower level) are dead and/or rotting. Many cuts show ineffective or incomplete compartmentalization, wounds soft/tender/rotting. Possibly excessive fungus. Resulting/developing tangled mess is damaging branches that are rubbing/growing into each other.
