Top Seeding Paster with Rye Grass for winter grass - Buddy was Bugging Me Got Chased Off
Tips, Tricks
Just top seeding the pasture with some rye grass seed before a rain is due. The rain will splash dirt and cover the seed so it will take. While I was seeding Buddy keep bugging me and trying to get me to give him some seed, he thought it was corn or grain, so he had a hissy fit, started bucking and running around, I ignored him so he picked on Mr. T, so Mr. T kicked him and by the time I got camera out they know something was up so they were watching me. I talk more about this Winter Horse Care here on my web site: http://www.thinklikeahorse.org/index-3.html#39

I have a question....do you use perennial rye grass or annual rye grass? I know there's a difference and the wrong one is bad for horses?

Dam that golf cart of yours has a really silent engine, maybe more silent then those electric cars. Ha ha ha! Poor Mr.T and Buddy! :)

Thanks for mentioning endophytes, I noticed a lot of seed suppliers saying endophytes free. It made me more interested in finding out why. Maybe that is why the last barn I was at the manager wouldn't let her horses eat a blade of grass. Good to know though, definitely keep that in mind when ever I would need to over seed a pasture of my own.

Thanks Rick. Weaver is the name brand tractor supply has. There aren't any tack shops local to where I live, only one I know of and it caters to English riders.. But anyway, thanks again. I value your opinion. I've learned so much from your videos and website. The critical eye and ear is very important and once u know its so easy to pick out the ones that think they know..

How would I know,I don't know what different kinds and brands they sell, For store bought I like double diamond but they are a little stiff and thick - I just got a nice halter that someone sent me it seems nice will do a video on it soon, and did a video on another rope halter I like, search my channel for rope halter it should come up. RE: Bobby McCoy Rick quick question off subject.. Is a rope halter from tractor supply a good halter?

My grandpa and grandma own a sodfarm and they have about 15 acres of the farm fenced off for the horses. Last winter they put rye grass in the horse pasture, but they of course did it to where the whole pasture was rye. The horses became overweight and had risk of foundering, because they were able to eat grass twenty four seven all year with very little riding. This winter they are just going to feed the horses hay. I can see how just doing what you are doing would be good though.

Do you find that you have people over there that blah on about "Grass effected horses"? I like my horses to have grass, yet there are so many here that say that grass is BAD! It does my head in but the talk about RYE is the worst! We do have endophytes here in NZ but IMO No grass is worse than the few bad bits about grass. Anyway just something that we come up against here and wondered if it was New Zealand specific or everywhere.

We have been over sowing here too (we are in spring here in NZ) but after a drought then super wet winter we have massive bare patches, but luckily we have great weather atm for germination. I was interested that you are sowing rye though cause here there are so many that say NO to rye, but in I too have been sowing a mix, rye, fescue, brown top and some clover (it happened to be in the mix so out it went) and I figure that if I give them choice they will take what they want and have variety.
