Is it a disease if some leafes are a bit purple and if so do i have to cut them?

I thought suckers grew from roots? I call the suckers that you are removing 'side shoots' which grow between a leaf joint and the main stem. I suppose it depends where you live in the world. I grow tomatoes in the UK with varying success but I am never be sure when to start feeding.
