Good information but crucial to success with growing bulb onions in the home garden is length of day. In Virginia you are at a latitude that permits you to grow just about any variety -- same as here in Santa Clara county. However in upper Michigan or south Florida they have to pay attention to day length to ensure success. We have more about that in our video as well as demonstrating when and how to harvest. Anyway, this is a very well made video with much good information.

Thank you for sharing this planting tips. I ordered copra for my long day location, it's my first time to grow this variety, said to be best storage onion. I will watch this video again when it is time for me to plant my onions. Cheers.

Thats a lot of onions and leaks. Can I ask where you buy those from?

We're looking at six inches of snow tonight, so no planting yet, but we will take the added moisture for winter and summer crops. Looks like you'll have to hire some kids closer to the ground. I made myself a press with dowel rods and drop them in. Try using a mini flexible tripod for better stability.

In Finland most people grow onions from SETS which are just small onions with no roots or leaves on them. In the UK lots of people start their sets off in seed trays and then plant them out when the root system is established.
This year I am going to try onions and leeks from seed, I have sown them in some root pouches, but I reckon it will be another 6-7 weeks before I can get them in the ground, which is still frozen solid. -
This is fun.. My red shallots are getting leggy I was windering if they were trying to escape but I just threw in more dirt.

Thanks for the information, I didn't know any of that. A question off the subject, I bought strawberry plants from walmart but still to early to plant them. What can or should I do to keep them alive? Should I plant them in a large pot? Can I keep the roots damp without killing them?
Thanks

You should have video taped you crawling around! I would have. :O) Who cares what others think is what I say buddy. So, tell us where you got the onions/leeks. Dixondale Farms? It's where I'm going next year...likely. You do Candy, 1015Ys, or what?
