Tips on Backyard Chickens, Quail and Other Fowl Play
Tips, Tricks
Every individual that values self-reliance the way I do knows how important it is to grow your own food. In some cases, this means going outside of the conventional herb garden in the backyard. In this video, I explain all the things you will need to know BEFORE you get your first chicken or quail. We discuss chicken coops and quail housing, how many birds should you have, what you should feed your birds and how to prevent common diseases once you get your chickens and quail. **************************************************************** For those of you looking for the proper dosage of Corid for chickens and quail: This is the proper dosage for both chicken and quail affected by coccidiosis. PLEASE NOTE: This should be the ONLY source of drinking water for at least 5 days. This dosage is based on a 1 gallon water/corid solution. The preventative dose (.006%) for Corid Powder is 1/3 teaspoon. The moderate outbreak dose (.012%) for Corid Powder is 3/4 teaspoon. The severe outbreak dose (.024%) for Corid Powder is 1.5 teaspoons *********************************** Music Provided by: Life of Riley Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ SUBSCRIBE TO HGMM ►► bit.ly/HGMMsub NAILED IT! ►► http://bit.ly/JonNailedIt ***** Home & Garden for Mere Mortals web site: http://homeandgarden.formeremortals.net/ ***** For Mere Mortals is a trademark of © ZRAM Media, LLC http://formeremortals.net/

How do you care for them in the winter? Here in Texas winters can be harsh:

Thanks for the tip about "skirt metal wire" in south east asia there lots of rats and mice usually they come at night and the next morning one of my chicks was eaten and the other one lose 1 feather and on one leg dont have nail i have to heal her and now its fine with with out 1 wing ;( Usually the rats always try to find away even if you block the hole they will keep trying to enter. Here there are lots of quail also and quail layers farms lol. Nice video!

Do you name your birds?
-
That was eggcruciating watching. Please watch your own video and see if you are able to get any useable info from it. I have no idea how to keep chickens and quail after watching this.

What? This video is so confusing. It takes 3 to 4 quail to make a chicken egg. What? Cut out the jokes as they get in the way and don't give us a combined lecture on ornithology, engineering and architecture.

Actually worth images it's even more confusing as the images are not clear am MD we don't know what you are talking about
-
Too much info with no context. Show some images as you speak otherwise it's all Greek

I know where I live theres alot of mosquitoes and have a problem with avian pox. It will look like little black bumps on the face and can actually spread down the throat and cause issues, pretty sure ivermectin liquid works on it but is a little pricey. Video covered alot of really good points, there are raccoons here and they can grab thru the wire so smaller on bottom is better. Corid is not labeled for the chicken, but is better then the stuff that is labeled for them when treating coccidosis and less harsh. You can also feed a medicated chick starter to the chicks and has a medication for coccidosis. Also a quarantine pen is needed if you get new chickens from someone, if they are sick or something can kill you flock if not careful and they need to be introduced slowly with a place to hide especially if younger old chickens need to get the pecking order in line. Work in a farm store so knew pretty much all you said and was really good video, never heard of the eye worms or rat issue. Biggest problem in my area are the bears, they will crush your pens killing the bird just looking to see what's in it. Lost alot of customers from the bears wiping out their entire flock and can't do anything, their protected for some reason.

is there a bad or strong smell when you are raising these birds?

Egg-cellent video!

Hi
You may lift the energy and activity of chickens by feeding chopped onions and give the amount of garlic cloves in water (one chopped clove +1.5Lwater )/day 5time /month -
Egg-cellent job Jon. There was a lot of good informashe-hen! 🐔🐣

eggsceptionally good video. :P My neighbors had a whole bunch of chickens and a few roosters. I enjoyed having them around. They gave most away and I think the last hen was taken by a predator. A small dog also went missing around that time. We have mountain lions here but I think it more like that the owl made off with them. It is a huge owl.
Two roosters are left and they like to sleep in the trees. One sleeps in the tree right by my driveway and greets me in the morning. :)

Nice vid Jonathan! Also no nose ring? I liked how it looked. Ignore the haters 😜. Looking forward to more vids on here and nailed it.

When had chickens every year when I was little but almost none of them ever survived. They always seem to end up in our freezer.

Great video, but one wee thing...I live in the north of Scotland. It's normally fairly cool to cold here. We don't have any heating lamps and our hens lay all of the time. Do you have soft as hens in the USA or something? ;-)

How did that chicken joke NOT turn into a micro-jig segue. I thought for sure. LOL I was waiting for it.
