I gave up on grass, i did the entire yard with ajuga, it loves the damp shade , planted them 6'' apart. you can even mow it. Before i had all dirt and leaves , now its all green. Ajuga, when grass wont grow there , Ajuga will thrive.

I let my shade area ,[ most of my back yard] , grow longer ,and cut at the highest level on my mower. Then heavy rain lays it all flat and it doesnt stand up after, and it just rots againt the wet soil, even the lawn mower wheel tracks make it die. I tried 2 1/2 inches keeps it from flopping over and has some spring in it to stand up. Contant reseeding seems to be the only answer, because grass really doesnt want to be in the shade.
