Thinning Green Bean Plants (Bush Beans)
Tips, Tricks
Beans are one of the easiest crops you can grow and taste so delicious. In this video, I show you how to thin out your bean plants. My bean seed packet recommended planting beans every two inches and then thinning to four inches once they started to come up. I waited a little late to thin mine, but in this video show you how easy it is to thin them, and how to provide support to your stems so your bean plants don’t fall down during thunderstorms. My cats like to help in the garden too. They fertilize and water my plants every day if you know what I mean

I'm with you on pulling up plant's for thinning. My OCD drives me insane when I do it.

My problem and i need help from my net farmer friends.
OK, I am green at this!
Made raised beds, put in the soil, enhanced with worm casting and other stuff.
Planted beans---started to grow and there began to show beans--so far so good!
THEN!
Plants started to develop some type of fungus or something---the leaves turned a silvery red with spots.
SO, I pulled them all up and started to turn the soil for replanting--and I wanted to get rid of as much root as I could.
Strange, I found NO earthworms.
So, I was going to dig up part of the back yard where I suspect there are worms and put them in the bed before replanting.
Any thoughts?

Thanks for sharing Natalie. To support my bush beans I use 2 rows of fishing line on both sides of the beans and then anchor them at the end of the row to a wide stake with holes drilled in them. This works very well. I wish I had made a video when I used it last year.

You could have put the extras in planters, buckets, or even around a cage.

I can't believe you killed them to be honest. :)

I'm so confused. Why instead of seeding seeds so close to each other to later on have to thin them, why not plant the seeds far apart right away?? That's what i do with my beans, cantaloupes and radishes, so I don't have to thin them.

Are you growing cat nip in there? ;) Kitty seems to love it.

Lol your cat is all over your garden.

Thank you. Now I won't feel so bad thinning. And thank you for the laugh about your precious daughter!

Last year I did a double row of beans every 4 inches with great success. Beans dont like their roots disturbed and transplanting is questionable. I moved some beets a few weeks ago and I thought they were dead for 2-3 weeks LOL!.. Your garden looks awesome!

I seriously thought I was the only person who felt bad about thinning my veggies! I think I waited too long for my white radishes and now I don't think I will have any nice ones; but I'm going out now to do the beans :-( Thanks - great video!

I too live in Texas in the Austin area. when I plant my beans, I initially give them enough space so I don't have to thin later. saves time and resources. your garden looks lovely.

I have the same issue with thinning! I feel like I have wasted time and effort and not to mention a perfectly good plant lol

I know the feeling when you have to thin out the plants! I did them to carrots and beets last year and it was awful seeing all the seeds/plants wasted but it's all for the good of the plants and for them to fully max out when they grow! I just lay out bush bean seeds in the ground I planted them 4" apart and I will wait and see what happens...your video is informative!
