I worked at a nursery in Berkeley, CA that carried bougainvillea and that's where I first learned a few things about it. I've since moved south and in this part of the state, it's seemingly everywhere. Love it or hate it you can't go 2 blocks without a bougainvillea sighting. Lots of colors, sizes, shapes and forms make it a very common landscape plant -- especially fitting with the Mediterranean and Spanish architecture here in Santa Barbara. I'm in the "love it" category in case you're wondering. This is a long blog post. I cover: what they need, choosing a bougainvillea, planting, watering, pruning/trimming, fertilizing, pests, training, transplanting, uses in the landscape, in containers, winterizing & indoors. Here's the link so you can read the rest of the post & get the step by step: http://www.joyusgarden.com/secrets-bougainvillea/

Hi I absolutely love this boganvilla. What is this color? Where can I find this plant? I live in Sri Lanka, we do have so many different colors of this plant but never have I seen this shade. I would appreciate if you could tell me how to get this. Thanks.

I absolutely love your bougainvillea! I planted mine in a spot against a wall where my roof sticks out above it. Is it possible to train it to go out and then over the roof? Otherwise, I might need to transplant it to another location.

Thank you for posting this. I am new to Bougainvillea and planted two this year. They are getting started so I have been giving water. And they are growing very very well, lots of green vines, leaves and thorns...but no flowers. I have vines that are climbing to 6 feet. They had some flowers at first when planted, but no flowers right now. When should I shape them ? Do I pick one or two vines to do the climbing ? Would love to have some flowers in 2 weeks, any suggestions ? Thanks ! Chip in NC.

Is it pronounced boogan-veeyah or boogan-vil-eea?

I'm on my second bougainvilla. Both bloomed for a time after having been planted but now I have very little growth. It was planted beside a wooden fence. It is very sunny and brutally hot by the fence which is like five feet or six feet from the road. I put my old coffee grounds on the plant. It came with some fertilizer in the pot. I put miracle grow on it too. The plant put out a little growth. The blooms dropped off. It is doing NOTHING. It really is a BIG BABY of a plant, a BRAT, and I feel like throwing this one away too. I'm willing to put up with big thorns just to get the awesome BLOOMS, but all I get is nothing. And maybe it doesn't like to be watered. WTF?? This plant is embarrassing me because it refuses to GROW or BLOOM. Makes me MAD!!!!!

My Bougainville plants are potted and 10 years old. Now they don't seem to bloom a lot. I feed them with bone meal and potash six monthly. Also I prune them annually . I live in northern India where the temp. are extreme ( tropical climate) . What do I do? I could not understand the concept of slitting. Please elaborate.

The most beautiful Bougainvilla you will find are in Greece. Do a google image search "Bougainvilla Greece" for a treat..

You should see the ones in Afirca (Kenya). This is the classic colour which I have here at home in southern Italy, but in Kenya you get red, orange, yellow and white bougainvillea, as well as a variegated flower (which is not as common). There's even a farm there which is now selling bougainvillea confetti, which is of course much better than the paper stuff.

@2:56....Q: If you keep it in its original plastic pot and plant the whole pot into the ground...how can it ever really grow into a strong root base? (Even despite the little slit openings that are made.)
Remaining in that underground pot...will it be able to grow & flourish into those tallish tree-type trunks like the one in this video? Wouldn't it eventually topple over in a wind with such a weak base? -
Lovely!
