horticultureandhomes,
i am totally SHOCK!! that you actually freeze okra seed !! i thought it is heat loving plant, never knew you can freeze it without destroy the embryo of the seed.. in the first i don't believe you .. i thought it is another youtube hoax.. haha.. after that i checked the comment.. and started to believe you. sorry for disbelieving you.
can you tell me what else vege seeds that can be freeze without destroy the seed ?
i am here in Germany, weather is not so good as usa...i treasure my {old} seed which i bought from home 2 or 3 years ago.. i soaked half of my seeds, put in tiny ziplock back , wrap with news paper and put on top of room heater, so that the temperature maintain 22 to 28 deg Celsius.. but nothing comes out.. after a weeks or so, i grew impatient that i think could be all rotten seeds.. so i squeeze some of them out and i can't tell if it is alive.. i meant i can literally squeeze it and all inside come out.. , so that means the seeds are through with moisture.. so the seed should be able to germinate, because it is no longer hard like the initial stage. but i can't determine if the light pale green inside the seed (the content that i squeezed out ) is alive or rotten..
i threw a lot of them away.. now, i have only like 8 or 9 seeds left.. and i am worry that i can't germinate any of them.
my weather here will only stable at beginning of june... so.. can you help me out.. THERE IS NO OKRA SEED here in Germany shops... none!! online seed package is quite expensive.. pls help.
and pls list out the seeds that can use freezing method with good success rate..
thanks.

Hello, I will be planting okra this year. I read in an article that water needs to be warm. Did you use warm water or was it room temperature? And by overnight, do you mean 8 hours?
Thanks! -
so how deep did you plant the ice cubes? 2 inches?
-
I tried this last year and had great germination results 12 out of 14 using 2 year old seeds. I have discovered that what the freezing of the seeds does is simulate winter. It is called stratification.

Have you considered raised beds?

I did think "okra in June?!" lol

Any update?

Nice alternative, I've soaked them for 3-4 days and then decided to grow them. Within 3 days after that they have sprouted! so far only 3 of the 8. But I know more will come soon.

Youre the BEST! VIVA OKRA :)

I have allways soaked mine and had great luck but I plan on a 24 hour soak ends up 48 hours with me changing the water frequently and by then I can see what seeds I want to plant and the ones I just toss in the weeds and won't grow!!I may try the ice tray deal sometimes.

So how long should it take for seeds to germinate and produce baby seedlings with this method? Also what's the logic behind freezing the seeds in ice tray? does it help shed the hard coating? Can the same method be used for other seeds such as eggplants?
-
So freezing a plant that thrives in heat increases germination? That seems backwards lol

funny i am useing the same seeds clemson spineless from american seed co, still .20 cents for the 2015 batch.....

I planted my okra seeds without freezing, just straight into the potting mix. Germination shot out on the 3rd day. Is that fast for okra seeds? This is my first time planting okra and don't know what other people have experienced in the past. I doubt freezing it in ice could make it germinate any faster (ie, 2 days or less). What's the germination speed for the frozen okra seeds in the video anyway?

@horticultureandhomes Have you tried the freezing idea with other types of veggie seeds? Does the freezing thing only work for seeds with thick seed covers like okra and spinach or have you tried less thick seed coverings?
-
Very interesting!! I've had good germination rates this year just soaking mine overnight in the fridge but this is an excellent idea which gives them a bit more water to feed off! How long does germination normally take with this method?

Great idea...
Which way do you plant your okra seed cubes in the ground; top down, bottom side up, on the side, or does it matter?
