I love the ZZ Plant! It's so shiny & tough as can be. The 3 reasons why I love this plant are: it tolerates low light, needs infrequent watering & is a stunning addition to any home. I love the ZZ Plant because it’s gorgeous, tough & so easy to care for. Other names it goes by are Zanzibar Gem, Welcome Plant & its tongue twisting botanic name Zamioculcas zamifolia. Mine just got repotted so I’m sharing that project with you along with tips for keeping your ZZ healthy & looking like its fabulous self. I’m always interested to know where plants are from and which others are in the same family and/or genus. This shiny beauty shares the same family with these other popular houseplants: pothos, spathiphyllums, agloanemas and diffenbachias. You can find these plants in my book Keep Your Houseplants Alive if you’re new to the wonderful world of indoor plants. To sum it all up: ignore this plant & it’ll be happy. Of course, shower it with admiration and praise but no babying is needed with this 1. Water your ZZ Plant infrequently, don’t let it sit in water, keep it out of direct sun & never use leaf shine. Sounds like a winner of a houseplant to me! This looks like a beautiful plant and I want one😜‼. It's winter here in Eastern Canada, so it might be awhile before I find one😏. But, find one I will👍🏻‼.
Really enjoyed your take on this plant and have subscribed to your site😊. -
I love these plants. I live in a cold climate so I do all my growing inside, the downside to cold climates is that in the winter the air is very dry. Long story short on this all my Ferns died even when I moved a humidifier next to them, put a bunch of pebbles in their tray, then filled the tray with water. (*note the pot wasn't sitting in water.) Used cedar chips on top of the soil to hold moisture around the plant. I literally did everything to save those plants that I could. Meanwhile my snake plants and ZZ's exploded into life when things dried out. If I had to do things over again I wouldn't have touched ferns. I'm also growing rubber plants which struggled with moisture too. (dropped leaves) But once I put in the wood chips and changed to a potting soil with much more peat moss in it they came back. I have Peace lillies as well and all 3 of those are growing beautifully.

Hi Joy. Thank you for the great video. Could you tell me approximately how much of the soil should be potting soil and cactus succulent? I don't want to get the proportions wrong.

can you repot a zz plant when a new leaf is developing
-
if it is been put in a small pot how often do you water
-
It is a hardy yet very elegant looking plant. It would look great in a study. I just purchased a small one but i have high hopes for it.

i found scales on my indoor ZZ plant. I ran to Home Depot to get some neem oil and now i have a prefect ZZ plant..
-
i transplanted mine into a bigger pot and mulched it (i read they like that, to protect its roots) but now its dying. ughhhhhhhhhh. i think its new potting mix is too moist. i find the lowest maintenance plants the hardest because i love to baby them lol
-
my zz plant is getting to big. when I repot it, can I just pull apart some of the roots and stems?
-
how can it be so big it isent so big in sweden
-
Mine got scale! What a mess! I've used neem oil, so we'll see what happens!

I just saw one of these at wall mart and it stood out. first time I ever seen it and so i brought it home and just repotted it. It is a really nice plant but it has the same effects on pets as Dumb cane does. It could cause swelling and suffocation if ingested or just chewed on.

I love this plant, but my leaves tend to lean heavily to one side or the other. I've put in dirt to try to give it more support, but it still flops over. Any suggestions?
-
Beautiful zz. I have one that is a problem. the leaves are folded in as if in prayer...I'm very good about watering, it's never been outside. it's in a south room in the north corner...Love your videos, you always make me smile.

I love ZZ plants! Mine looks just like yours, and you are right, they do get quite heavy. This year, mine has sent up at least twenty new rachides (compound leaves), and they still keep growing. It's been sending up new growth nonstop since the beginning of July, and I still keep finding new ones, two months later. I repotted it back in spring into a pot two sizes larger. If it keeps this up, I'm going to have to repot it again next year. It's such a gorgeous carefree plant!
