http://empressofdirt.net/weeding-tips-gardeners/ Weeds and invasive plants are something just about every gardener deals with. If you create a routine and have the right tools (and timing), this chore becomes much more—dare I say—enjoyable. In this short video, I'm showing some of the common weeds and invasive plants I deal with on a daily basis and the tools I use to remove them. Having the right tools on hand really does make it so much easier. My other main tip is: always weed the garden after it rains. This makes it much easier to pry the roots out of the soil. The Billhook (made by Fiskars) is very good for getting below the roots and rhizomes of plants, loosening them from the soil, which enables me to pull out the entire plant. If you get every bit of it, it won't regrow. This is the tool in the video that looks like a funky machete. I use it for all sorts of tasks besides weeding. There are also two gardening forks I like: the Fiskars Softtouch Weeder (with an ergonomically-shaped handle) and the basic Scratch Weeder. If you have a lot of deeply-rooted weeds, see if you can borrow some of these tools from a friend to learn which ones you like best. The forks allow you to get right under than plant roots and force them from the soil. It does take a careful hand: you don't want the roots to break. But, after some practice, you'll get very good at it. And it's quite satisfying when they make that popping sound as they surrender and come free. (Yes, I'm a gardening geek.) No two gardens have the same weeds or the same invasive plant struggles, but, if you have the best tools for removing them, it's much more manageable. If you've got a weed or invasive plant that drives you nuts, come over to my blog and enter it in the poll: Vote for the Worst! Let's see which plants give gardeners the most trouble. Hopefully this will prevent others from planting them! This video was made for a post on Empress of Dirt which was sponsored by Fiskars. This content and the recommendations are entirely my own.
