My cousin used to live slightly up Halawa Heights. His name is David Nakashima and his sister is Christine. His neighbor, and friends were Les Kinoshita, and Terry Abo.

Oh, different Nakashimas then. I'll try & cut back on the water & see if that helps. Hopefully, that does the trick & our Vincas will come back to life. Thanks for all the help!

No, used to live by Forty Niners. I graduated from Aiea in 1966. You could be right about too muc water. Maybe try and cut back and see what happens. My mom, used to be good with plants. She had vincas and I remember it used to be in direct sun, but I don't remember how much water she used to give. I think you should try your idea, and cut back...don't soak it.

That's intersting to know about the Impatiens. I was wondering if our Vincas had water rot & if that was the reason for the small flowers & yellow leaves. This is actually my Mom's garden & she was a great gardener, but I'm an amateur as you can tell. Yes, we live up in the heights. It is cooler here, but during the summer months it can get very hot as well. Did you used to live in Halawa?

Impatiens, need a lot of water, is what I notice. I've seen them on bare rock clinging on, and living next to waterfalls on Maui. Nothing but a wet rock, no dirt...and there they are, blooming but stunted. Vinca's, on the other hand, don't need as much water, is my guess. Their leaves and stems are thicker, to retain moisture. Do you live up in the heights area? It's cooler up there. I'm from Aiea originally.

Hi Dennis, Yes, I think that's what I'll do. I'll keep the unhealthy plants & see if things change. I read on-line that impatiens need very little water (Almost drought like conditions), but you mention that you water every day. I also pretty much water every day as well. Hope your impatiens start doing better (Yes, probably the new flowers is a good sign). I live in Aiea, so I was wondering if the hot summer weather has something to do with our Vincas not doing so well.

Lynn, I dont know what the correct answer is. What I would do is keep the unhealthy ones and be patient. Perhaps they will recover. That is what am doing with my impatiens. I keep watering them daily, and hope that they could survive this disease. Some of them have new flowers, which I think is a good sign? Good luck with yours. Let me know how they are doing? Where are you located?

I read about that disease/fungus, but I was hoping that it's not what our Vincas have. I pulled out some of the really bad ones about a month ago. I bought a few more & planted them in that same area. Should I pulll out the others that aren't doing well & buy & plant new Vincas? Or, do you think it'll get the same disease/fungus all over again?
-
Lynn, My impatiens, don't look like what you saw on the video. About three weeks ago, the garden got Downy Fungus, which is fatal to impatiens. They all look leafless, and on the verge of dying. Downy Fungus, is spread via spores. I don't know if your vincas are affected by the same fungus. My symptoms sound similar to yours. Downy, is world-wide.

Hi Dennis, I have Vinca growing in our front yard, which look very similar to Impatiens. They were blooming so nicely & then suddenly they don't look good (Some of the flowers are really small now & the leaves are yellow). I was thinking about pulling them out, but bought some Chicken Manure pellets yesterday to see if that would help. I've never used Chicken Manure before (I'm very new to gardening) & wanted to know how to use it & how much I should use.

Impatiens, will live for years here in Hawaii. It has to be trimmed to keep it from dying. I think once they produce seeds, if left alone, they will eventually die.
