Tips, Tricks
Hallsome Farm video sustainable farming setting up aquaponic gravel beds and responding to questions about aquaponics. We have rebuilt our aquaponic system replacing plastic totes for wooden boxes with liners. 8 beds 2' x 8' x 12" deep filled with granite gravel. We are growing peppers and tomatoes in the heat of the Texas summer in a greenhouse. Thank you for sharing. Trying to decide exactly how I want mine set up.

Are those pond liners food safe/approved or will you have the plastic leeching into the system?
-
I need a help. Last few days i looked lot of videos about this systems but i can not understand why people use small rocks instead ground (soil). I'm from Serbia and we have here very very quality soil but this thinks with rocks confused me?
-
Looks like a really good system
-
the greatest success that I have ever had was by following the Keiths Ponics Site (just google it) definately the no.1 info that I have ever tried.
-
How do you ensure that the drain pipes don't leak where they extend through the pond liner in the bottom? silicon, gasket sealer?
-
Not really standard plastic last 2-3 years, cost is a little cheaper but replacing every 12 years is cheap in comparison
-
Doesn't it get expensive replacing the plastic for the greenhouse every 10-12 years?

Nice

Hey Bob
For the clean boxes before the liner, vacuum by all means but I add a layer of old (recycled) carpet and fit it on floor and onto walls between the liner and the wooden walls, The carpet will eventually get manky (Yuckch!) but mine has not gone funky in three years.. This protects the liner and does not take up near any space PLUS, it recycles freely available materials that would otherwise be filling up the refuse stations. -

Great question I have a system that has been using bell siphons for almost 6 years now, them problem with them is they are so efficient that as your system ages and material builds in between the rock water flow slows significantly. The bells are very efficient and shut off before much of the older bed can drain. Means roots are always under water and little fresh water is circulating. So a flood and drain get all the water out, all the roots get air then everything get new water all over again. I see a great difference in plant growth and production with the flood and drain. Hope this helps

Why not use a bell siphon? They are so much more reliable than an electric timer, and also your roots will have far superior aeration. Best of luck Bob from UK, thanks for sharing.

Sure just measure the size you need and email me at bobf.hall@gmail.com the cost is 38 cents a square foot plus shipping. You want to make sure you have plenty of over hang as the corners take more material then you would think. And thanks for watching, love it if you would share and subscribe. Also send me your channel I'll take a look.

Very cool setup! We are building our first system in a greenhouse, ( I have videos on YouTube too), and I'm about to purchase real inert for the grow beds. Was going to try to use the greenhouse cover but I think it's too thin. About to buy dura skrim but I would like a quote from you first!
