Did you know that you can start your own mulberry tree from seeds? Well, you can and it is not as hard as you may think. Seed propagation of the mulberry starts with the ripe fruit. Learning how to grow a mulberry tree from seed is an inexpensive way of getting this show plant that is valued as a wildlife food sources for many species of birds and deer.

I put bunch of complete mulberry fruits into pots with good soil and they all sprouted and grow great,
in two years are almost 6 feet tall.. -
I got lucky. I just shoved some seeds in a planter, watered them and gave them full sun, and up they came!

You don't need 90 days of refrigeration to get the seeds to germinate. Pick the RIPE fruit--the Purple fruit. Pack in a freezer bag, and put them in the freezer for 2-3 weeks--this is the "stratification"--the fruit has experienced a freezing period like a normal winter. Take a few mulberries out; thaw; put in a bowl of water a couple hours; and mash the fruit to release the seeds. Use a small strainer to keep the seeds in and the pulp goes out with the water. Dry on a paper towel for a day or two. Then, you can plant in potting soil in a seedling container. I use toilet paper holders cut in half, and a salad container for the incubator. I put the TP holders in the incubator; fill with potting soil to the top (packed), then place my seeds on top. "Sprinkle" only a bare, bare covering of soil on top of the seeds. Water with warm tap water; then cover with the lid (don't forget to poke 4 small holes in top). Sit container outside in partial sun/shade. You will have seedlings in 2 weeks. Done it.

I accidentally found a much easier method to sprout Mulberry trees. When I was first starting to mess around with my indoor aquaponics system, I was experimenting with different ways to buffer the PH levels. One of the methods I used was crushing up raw mulberries straight off the tree into the settlement tank. I did this in a strainer to remove the pulp from the water. The seeds were small enough to fall through the holes in the strainer as I was smashing the berries and they fell to the bottom of the tank, where they lay, completely forgotten about until about a week later when I started noticing seedlings sprouting up at the bottom of the tank. At first, I had no idea what they were but then remembered the mulberries. I removed the seedlings with a net and now have 5 mulberry trees, all about 18-20 inches tall, growing in my house. They aren't super happy with no direct sunlight, and it's a constant battle to keep my cat from eating the leaves, but they are alive, and I intend to plant them out in the spring.

Do mulberries bear fruit indoors? Like, if I grew a dwarf mulberry, could I look forward to tasty fresh fruit treats every once in a while?

if i am getting my seeds from dried mulberry fruit rather than fresh mulberry fruit, would they still need to do 90 days in the refrigerator? thanks

Very nicely done. I like to let them ferment much like tomato seeds to get a good clean seed. Everything else is the same way. We do it for elderberry the same way. My grandmother showed me how to do this the year before she passed away. Chuck
