Tips, Tricks
Coley and I are excited to present our 3rd episode of Grow It, Cook It, Eat It. You can find the recipe and other garden links below. This episode is all about Squash and Zucchini. Coley presents 5 tips on cooking and storing the vegetables which includes Zoodles. I focus on pollination and why fruit browns. I also talk at length about identifying and controlling squash bugs, beetles and vine borers. I grow my S & Z up cages and supports for easy spraying. And most importantly, don't forget to eat what you grow and cook, with your family and friends! Cheers! Thank you for the informative video. However, I could not tell if Coley was wearing a tank top or a bikini top.

5:00 "you can use it in whatever kind of crap you want" ?!?!?! lol

Do you assist with the Zucchini/Squash stem climbing up the inside the trellis or does it do it on it's own?
-
Gary, Well I lost my squash and pumpkin again to vine borers. I heard they only bore into the first few inches of the stem. I wrapped 12" of stem in aluminum foil. And as it grew covered with a floating row cover, didn't work. Seven may work but Id have to cover the entire vine with it and reapply after rain and each watering. The vines grow all over the place. Do you know the life cycle of the borer? Can I just cover the soil if that's where they come from?

The best powdery mildew tactic I've found has been simple pruning. Spraying milk, serenade, neem, potassium bicarbonate all did something but not for long. Cutting off the oldest stalks and leaves and leaving the new leaf growth was key. The new stuff seemed to have immunity for 10-14 days and the zucchini kept coming for another month.

I think you just saved me from a couple gallons of frozen zucchini that would have turned brown

Great series. Before I started following you I had suggested to another one of the big gardening channels to do the same thing. Glad to see you're doing it with your friend.
I'll make one suggestion that I think is relevant. For me, mostly using a smartphone to browse videos and the streaming to our TV I always forget to expand the description area. If you copy and paste all that as the first comment then more people are likely to read it. Maybe it's just me, via the YouTube Android app, but I'm willing to bet a lot of people miss that information.
Example, I watched this video the day you put it out but only now realized your friend has links in the description. -
Who is Coley? Your wife?

Hi Gary, awesome video! I may try growing squash next year. I love that tape idea. Can you tell me what kind of pepper is in the thumbnail? Looks like it would be really good pickled.
-
Neem oil and what? Could you please tell me what brand and what not, would be very helpful especially since they are all on sale right now. I had over 12 and I lost them all due to pests. :(

hi Gary, about pests; i have a few lily's in my garden and the typical little red beetle is present. Its larvea does a lot of damage on these plants. Now, it seems to be the best remedy to pick them of the leaves by hand, but you know they live in their own poop ( yuck! ), as a camouflage. i tried neem oil / soap mix, wich has done good job on other pests, but i dont know about the lily beetle larvea. Do you have any experience with it? This morning larvea was gone, but they could be dropped as they do, on the soil and hide?

Gary & Coley, I love this series of grow it, cook it, eat it. It has inspired me to try to grow zucchini again. I've been battling the dreaded vine borer for years and am still trying to come up with a solution that doesn't use chemicals. Next year I'm trying a collar around the base filled with vermiculite. I've heard the Vaseline on the base stem will keep them off as well. Keep them coming. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Have a great day in the garden and kitchen. -
Gary it is possible to buy parthenocarpic courgettes (Zuchinis) so do not need insects to pollinate their flowers. They also only produce female flowers and no male, and so will also set fruit. An example here in the UK is Courgette Easy pick green F1. Here in the Uk we tend not to grow squash but people who do tend to plant sunburst. Squashkin Autumn crown, Rolet or Patty Green Tint.

Good information guys. Thanks. Best wishes Bob.

Once again, I loved this video. I am just now growing zucchini for the first time. Thanks Gary for the cage tip. I have them up against a fence but the bottom leaves are on the ground and dying. And thank you Coley for the freezing tip. I didn't know you could freeze zucchini...and now I do. I like using them in soups. If I blend it, my hubby doesn't know it's there...

Nice job to the both of you..
