Slug Wars Trilogy pt. 1 - Coffee Grounds vs Slugs
Tips, Tricks
We add a lot of used coffee grounds to our garden every year. And that includes adding them directly to our garden beds as mulch. Our primary motivation in doing so is to improve soil fertility, but we've always hoped that the grounds were also helping to deter slugs. I say "hoped" because we were never very confident the grounds were having much of an impact on the slugs. Despite all of the grounds, we've still had our fair share of problems with them. One Yard Revolution is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used. Maybe they are right sided slugs and by nature travel to the right. A human will always walk more towards their strong side, It would be interesting if you would have used those same slugs and turned the box around before putting them in and repeat the same test.

And you can change a yard one slug at a time. Lol

Great video. I wonder if the slugs are following the slime trail they left from the previous trip to that side. Still a good idea w/ the coffee grounds- will try myself. Thanks sharing

does instant coffee work?

Wow, this is an awesome video. Thank you for your efforts. Did you ever perform the next test? I'll go search your videos.

interesting experiment :)
-
Thanks for the great video. I just put the grounds into my worm compost bin.
-
Great test! Thanks for the video.
I don't drink any coffee myself, but after watching a few of these videos, I got someone to save up their grounds for me. They seem like black gold for your garden! I'm trying to fight the slugs, but each year they come back with a vengeance, so I'm quite eager to give this method a try. I'm currently air drying those grounds for storage, and I've already got a few buckets filled, so I'm gonna be armed to the teeth with coffee ammo next spring! Bring it on you slimey bastards! -
I had a thought-it would be interesting to mark the slug that kept close to the coffee grounds to see if it was the same one. I wonder if that one slug likes his morning coffee!?
-
Wow! slug races. place your bets. Great video and info. I am now a fan.

Thanks so much for sharing! Very interesting. :)

Put the ground in the spraying water and spray that water on the leafs.. slugs wont each as much from the leafs :)
-
I found on my allotment that woodchips and coffee grounds certainly have kept any slugs away.
-
I wonder what would happen if you spun the container 180 degrees in place. I am curious to know if they were just headed away from the direction of the light????
-
Would you put this much of a layer of coffee around your plants? It looked like more coffee than you were using in your coffee fertilization video.

Pretty cool experiment c:

Awesome, thanks for sharing, I'm going to go sprinkle some grounds! :-)

This was an awesome experiment. We have been disconnected from our coffee grind supply at the restaurants due health dept not allowing them to be stored on the premises. We grow a tremendous supply of mint and noticed that slugs are never on the mint plants or many of the other herbs despite significant amts of rainfall. Wondered if dried and powdered mint would do the same thing as grinds. How fresh were your grinds...does the effect wear off after wash out? This would also happen with the mints or herbs so reapplication would be necessary. Oh for a lifetime to set up these kinds of experiments. Thanks so much for doing the job.
