Seed Starting Onions and Leeks Indoors: Save Money!: The Rusted Garden 2013
Tips, Tricks
The materials to start onions and leeks indoors, in this video, only cost about $5. I will end up with nearly 150 onion transplants and 25-35 leek transplants. Onions and leeks are hardy plants that can be over seeded in seed cells and be pretty firmly handled when seperating them into individual transplants. No need to be gentle. Hi Gary, I transplanted my leek seedling at about the same size as yours, but they have not moved, they just sit there waiting for something to happen, what are they waiting for and what can I do to help them along. My onions are doing well. Thanks

Thanks for your earlier assistance Gary. I am located in a tropical country with high temperatures around 27C -
34C. Would leeks grow faster in indirect light 8hours, with 2-3 direct light in a cooler temperature 17C -20C. In compos table potting soil. What do I need to do to force leeks going to seed for future crops. As leek seeds and leeks are not sold in the country where I currently reside. Regards -
When do you use the liquid fertilizer on your onion seedlings?
-
I was always taught that you constantly trim back the leek once it starts getting spindly. Then the plant concentrates more of its growth into producing a thicker stock and root. Maybe I was taught wrong. Just curious to weather or not anyone else does this?

I planted mine 6 days ago with no heat mat, still no sprouts just keeping them moist. did you use a mat for yours? I also planted my Leeks today as well today is the 19th of January.. I've never started onions from seed before so I am wanting to to be sure I am doing everything correctly.. Thank you for the video

Do you ever trim the roots to allow for new root growth. I have never planted leeks before, but this is a technique I use with spring onions to encourage growth when I transplant from a container into the soil.

I regularly grow my leek plants from seed and usually have 150-200 plants in my garden. I've tried onions but have never been too successful. This is sad because there are so many wonderful varieties on the market now from France and Italy. I want to try your ideas out 2016. Thanks for you videos.

Thanks Gary, another great video. You mentioned that you use liquid fertilizer. What type do you use and how often do you apply?

I am in Zone 2B, with last frost around Mother's Day, so how soon could I put them in the ground outdoors?

great video I am going to start some onions today

You speak nothing of light or germination temps

Im in zone 7 I can put mine out March 1st. But anytime in march works. Even though they can take the frost, they won't necessarily grow faster if it stays in the 30's and 40's.

The can actually handle frost nicely. I am in zone 7. After you harden your seedlings off for a week or two, they can really go out March 1st in my area. They could go out earlier but just because they can handle freezing temperature, it doesn't mean they will start growing any sooner, so March.
