Secret Garden Coloring Book: Pros & Cons
Tips, Tricks
This review is my opinion only on the secret garden adult coloring books. Since this review I have tried prism color pencils and they do much better than the ones in this video. However, viewers tell me that after a fourth layer the paper still shreds. I see that you used Sharpies - they will bleed through, but there are other markers that do not - I think Stadler has markers that will not bleed through if you do not scrub the color in. Peta Hewitt suggests that you try out your supplies on the last page of the book to see how they will react on the paper. I use Prismacolor and the Stadler fineliners (which have to be used carefully, but are great for small areas).

Thank you for this video! It really helped me get a perspective of what to look for in my first adult colouring book! All your troubles would have been mine, so thanks for the heads up! xx

Your last con is the one that bothers me the most is that the designs are so close to the inside edge and also you can't tear them out. I guess I could cut out the page and get is spiral bound after but I dunno... I'd love to keep the book as it is. I haven't had the problem with the paper that you had, but from other comments it seems that it's a regional thing with which publisher you got. I'm just so happy there are way more adult coloring books now. I always wanted to be able to color designs like this but until the last few years I couldn't find any like this! Now they are everywhere!

I don't know but the uk paper is pretty thick but it is yellower cream but that doesn't bother me
-
please what is the type of paper used in coloring pages for adults if i want to print it ?

I have the SAME cons about her coloring books. Though I do love them for the same pros as well.

I am confused, especially your issue with blending/layering in this book. I always layer in this book, as many as 15 layers of colour at a time and I haven't had a problem with shredding at all. Perhaps it is either your pencils or method? I recommend applying your colour lightly.
The paper quality in this book is 10x better than most and I really appreciate that. I have spent £100's on colouring books, which have let me down and left me miserable because of the quality of paper. Most of them end up shelved because of that reason. Which is a shame because the illustrations are stunning in some of the books.
One thing I do agree on is the words intruding the images and the authors expectation to draw and fill in the blank areas. If I wanted to draw I would use my blank paper, I do not buy a colouring book to draw, I buy it to colour. However, I do not feel it is too much of an issue and do from time to time enjoy drawing the flowers and leaves.
With all of the above said, I do tend to use higher quality pencils such as the Polychromo's, Luminance, Irojitens, and Prismacolor. Therefore, I don't have blending or layering issues. In addition this leads me to think your tools are to blame over the book. Maybe you could buy some singles from the higher quality pencils, most of the above listed are open stock. Then, perhaps your opinions will change.
As for markers, well to be honest markers are made for card stock types of paper not colouring books...I'd be shocked if you found one colouring book that could hold alcohol markers. If Johanna did decide to release a book with the highest quality paper then people would then be complaining about the price.
In my honest opinion, her books deliver great images on very nice paper, infact I'd go as far as to say the paper quality is some of the best on the market at the moment.
Thanks for your time and Good luck :) -
i suggest using Yoobi pens, they don't bleed and work great!

I found the same objection to drawing in the book, I can't draw. I have Prismacolor pencils, a set of 24 for $20 on Amazon, but I found the colors can transfer to the opposing page. I like books where the opposing page is blank. I cure for the color transfer is to put a pice of tissue paper between pages.

very helpful, thank you

Bought mine Feb 2016 it is copyrighted 2013. The pages are very yellowish. Not happy.
-
I bought the UK version (reprinted in 2015) and coloured hard using Faber-Castell Classic Colour Pencils, the paper didn't* shred like how yours did!

PS. I love your videos, you are very talented. Greetings from France.

I like this book and agree with you about drawing. I also don't like drawing that's why I buy these adult colouring books.
About the remarks written on most pages you can block them out with the liquid white we use to correct whatever. I bought this book in France and the quality of the paper is excellent quite strong and the colour really white. I don't regret having purchased this book. I use Prisma pecils, Faber Castell and Caran d'Ache, only pencils. Happy colouring all the same. -
I agree with you 100% I use only Prismacolor Premier, they are soft pencils and still when i want to add more layers shred the paper, I love the quality of paper that Tangle Wood has, I'm not sure if you have or not, but check it our, the book is also $15.99 but I got it half price at Marshall's. Thank you for your help.
