with certain veg not doing so well do you think it is to do with the crazy weather the last few years,
-
We use crushed egg shells around plants to keep slugs and snails away. Also, a dish of beer attracts them.
-
The bean dilemma is far spread. Here in the US, too. Not one made it. Strange. Totally enjoying the videos, Sean !

How long until the green house turns up? don't think i can handle the suspense!!
-
the germination issue seems to be world wide, I am in New Brunswick Canada an had horrible rates on my beans this year. I planted then replanted about to do a second replanting (different seeds this time). Cause each time I have gotten only about 25% germination. First seeding I had a issue where the beans would come up but not have any leaves ( not eaten off, just did not have any) on about 1/2 of the few that did germinate.
Watching different channels and I have heard different people saying they have had germination issues all across the states as well. Not sure what is happening to the world, but it is ominous -
I hope you are saving the rose in your backyard, that was lovely, where you said you're putting in a vegetable garden. No lesser spotted Geoff's around?

Hi Sean,
Im glad that you mentioned the problem with germination. A lot of people on our allotment site have had problems with germination as well.
Do you think that it could be a wide spread thing this year? It might be interesting to find out if allotments in any other part of the country are having similar problems, especialy with pease and beans.
Regards,
Bill.

Ne plus ultra -as in the ones from Peter Thoday's dad?

It looks really nice! Love the pond!

Sean, it seems to be a challenging year for gardeners no matter where you live. Extreme is the word for this year's weather. Too much rain, not enough rain, too cold, too hot, slugs, snails, and my plaque, raccoons. The inside fence is pinned down with hardware cloth and the electric fence is firing away. I haven't seen any activity inside the sweet corn area since the fence was activated. I harvested two more tomatoes. These were miracle tomatoes in that the plant was hit with hail the last week in May and left nothing but a little sprout of a branch. All four tomatoes that had hail damage have come back stronger than ever. There are lots of blooms and lots of green tomatoes growing. The pumpkins are producing lots of male flowers but I've yet to see a female bloom. I don't know what's up with that.
Personally, I didn't have the trouble with germination that you did. I had some problems with flower seed germination but I chalk that up to inexperience with growing flowers. I hope the rain eases up for you and comes to the middle of the States to help water my garden.
Have a great touring the allotment day. -
Looking good Sean . Not had any germination issues like last year. I guess it might be your mislabeled potting compost.

Good update. It seems like you have had big problems with germination! I agree with what the gardener from Kew said to you, I big temperature difference, hot days cold nights, fortunately down here it's been mild most nights, so germination was not a problem. Is the firm building your new greenhouse or do you have to erect it yourself! I think when summer arrives next month! the gardens will all come on good, they always do, far to early to be worried about the young plants. Take care Graham

Ive had 100% germination this year , i live in essex , its seems strange what your experiencing , maybe your seed compost
-
Ohh poor Sean! I had no idea you had that much trouble. Whatever is there is looking good though. The slugs are particularly pesky this year. My brassicas all had caterpillars so today i thought i would go pick some off with my little bucket, stood there looking under the leaves. Nothing... Eh? So i sat down on a chair and decided to watch. A tiny little bird (i call them little pipibirds, no clue what they are, sort of like a sparrow but slender and much smaller) So the bird leasurely hops from one leaf stalk to the next like it was on stairs, stuffing itself with all the caterpillars. Haha. Brassica disaster averted! I had to make a real effort to find even one caterpillar. I thought, that's it, i'm going to lose them all when i saw the little scrape marks start on some leaves. Nature can be a blessing.

i bought the victorian kitchen garden box set the other day. sooo good.

I kinda miss cool season gardening watching your scene. Florida is hot, but we get three other grow sessions.
Your pond connected with me thinking I'd put one in, thinking stock tank of 1000 liters or so for backyard fishing.
You've got a real cool scene there...
Blessings & Abundance!
