Raised Square Foot Gardening - Atlanta, GA, May 19th, 2011
Tips, Tricks
Here's my garden located in Atlanta, GA. It consists of 3 raised vegetable garden beds following square foot gardening principals made popular by Mel Bartholomew. The soil is a third vermiculite, a third peat moss, and the last third is a combination of cow/chicken manure along with mushroom and pecan tree compost. Organic homemade compost was also administered to all seedlings when transplanted from seedling pots. All these plants were grown from seed. Here's some great gardening links I use often. Square Foot Gardening: http://www.squarefootgardening.com/ How to make paper pots for starting seeds and seedlings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlMDecwuj8U&feature=related A social networking website for gardeners. I use this website to write a diary and track my garden's progress. very cool! www.myFolia.com A free web application that helps you design your own square foot garden. I can't begin tell you how cool it is and you have to try it out! http://www.gardeners.com/Kitchen-Garden-Planner/kgp_home,default,pg.html Comments and questions welcomed and encouraged. Great news, B Cm! My garden is in its 6th year now and has matured a lot over the years. I should add a new updated video this year with a link on this video... Thanks for watching! Good luck with the bok choy! There are tons of varieties of bok choy and I like the giant version. For giant bok choy version do 1 per a square foot. I put about 5-6 seeds a square. When they get to about 6-8 inches I thin them down to 1 plant per square foot. With all the rest... I put em' in the wok for stir fry!

Hi Rob Love your garden Thanks for the up close and detail information. I am starting my SFG this week. After watching your video, I will try my hand at bok choy. I found Mel SFG soil mix online and ordered it to my local Home Depot. Can't wait to try it In Atlanta

Start now by planting indoors in bio-degradable pots. There's tons of videos on YouTube on how to make newspaper starter pots. Please note, not all plants should be started in pots indoors. Do research before planting. Right now I have tomatoes, sun flowers, Brussels spouts and all kinds of peppers indoors in starter pots.
