Pruning Tips for Early Spring with Young Maple Trees
Tips, Tricks
Garden author Doug Green http://www.youtube.com/user/headgardener2u/ shows you how he has pruned his young maple trees to give them the shape he wants and what he's doing this spring to maintain that look. A very simple technique with a young tree. Other pruning tips can be seen at http://www.douggreensgarden.com/pruning.html where Doug gives you the basics of how to prune any plant in your garden using only two kinds of cuts. I cut the bottom branches 6-9" long. The tree can use those leaves for production, yet you still signal to the tree to go elsewhere for growth. I have a young Big Tooth Maple, about 3 ft tall that has never been pruned. Its very bushy and healthy. I would like a central bare trunk for the first 3 or 4 feet, then branching I guess. Any further ideas? Steve

Hmm, ok. I'm not sure what type I have. I just dug them up from my yard and potted them for 2 or 3 years, then transplanted them. I have 18 along my driveway and hope to make a nice tunnel out of them. The tallest is about 6', and one grew 18" last year. : ) I plan to hire an arborist when they're bigger, but hope to help them in the right directioin until then.

There are two factors involved - the first is the kind of maple tree - some develop into roundish trees and some into more columnar trees. In general, if you have a common maple tree it will grow straight up until it gets to a "certain" point and then start to branch and develop side shoots to become a typical round shape. I also have a video in my channel about the two kinds of pruning cuts and how to make any plant "round" or "tall".

How do you help maples become more round rather then tall and skinny?

..another thought...the tree puts out these lower branches when young to aid in growth. I choose to leave the lower branches until a year or more after the tree is planted and then begin structural pruning. Most of these first branches will reduce themselves over time.
