Pruning Pepper Transplants: Greater Yields, Stockier Plant, More Side-Shoots & No Flowers - TRG 2015
Tips, Tricks
Removing the main growing tip of your pepper plants will produce stronger stockier plants and increase the yield of each plant. You end up with a lot more side shoot growth which means more flowers and peppers. You don't want your transplants flowering indoors. Prune them. Let them work on stem strength and side shoot production while inside. Check out my vegetable gardening blog: The Rusted Garden. The two growth peddles can be clipped as soon as two true leaves grow out. The growth peddle will continue to drain nutrients from the main stem and leaves. I clip mine as soon as I get two well grown true leaves. My plants grow faster and look very healthy. Also, try one aspirin in a gallon of water and spray top and bottom of leaves every three weeks. It makes them very strong and brilliant green. Happy Growing!!!! o

Hi Gary, what about those two little bottom ones, I noticed you didn't cut those off while pruning on any of them? Thanks.

Hi Gary, every when should I do the pruning? Thanks!

Hi Gary, thanks for the video. I want to try this next year. In the square foot gardening method, peppers are planted one per square foot. Should I plan to leave more space between the plants? How did you space your plants when you transplanted them to your garden?

Hi Gary, I have planted my pepper plants outside may 24th, and topped some , cut some in half. then when growth of side shoots came i cut of the 3 big leaves on the topped plants. The question is , what type of pruning does the plant need from here now while growing. I looked through all the videos and can't find any. what in needed now to maintain until flowering, or until flowering, and then when fruiting. I need to now if there is any more prunning, or topping/fimming is required while out side now for the summer season. ty Gary, hope to hear from ya soon. :)

So it is early May and I just purchased young plants from Home Depot...Probably 10-12 inches tall. Transplanted them outside yesterday into my raised bed garden. Is it Ok to top these as well since they've already been transplanted yesterday? I'm in Indiana...Thanks so much for all you share!!

can the same be done with tomato plants?

Another thing to remember with peppers is when you have them in ground and they are maybe a foot tall and may even have a few peppers on it to prune it at that time. Just like a lawn mower across the top few inches and it will increase the pepper increase 3-4 fold . I did this last year and couldnt believe. it.

Can you plant different peppers close together? I was told no, but mine are California wonder, honey crisp, carnival mix ?? If I have to space them apart from each other, how far do you recommend?

I wanna win neem ioil lol

Wow those pepper plants look great. What type of soil are they in? Did you start them in those cups?

I'm on the tail-end of growing season here in South Florida, and tried this technique with several varieties of peppers and really had great, consistent results...Particularly with some of the larger varieties like Giant Bells, Big Jim, Anaheim and others... The plants were much more sturdy, produced more side growth & peppers, and could support the weight of the fruits.. It just requires a little patience, as the plant regrows to its full potential.. Very helpful tutorial

great videos. quick question.
My pepper seedlings started dark green but after about a month many of them are turning light ...almost yellow.
Is that normal? Thanks
