Pruning Bougainvillea
Tips, Tricks
Flowering has almost finished. I will take some time today to prune the plant before the growth really starts. I would like to keep this plant very formal. What will happen if you wait till ALL flowers ( Bracts ) fall off..seem a shame to throw away those flowers at this stage.

I find that the way you pruned your bougainvillea would just encourage the tree to grow new shoots rampantly, instead of flowers. I mean the big, succulent shoots with long thorns and big soft leaves which would take a LONG LONG time to reach the stage of flowers formation. To encourage the tree to grow flowers, instead of new shoots, you should just pinched the very ends of each branches only a few centimeters from the branch ends.

I still have some, but I lose many of the original ones..a couple per day, is that nth norm? Thank you for your help. Louise Fletcher

I live in Canada and I've have a bougainvillea, this past summer was its third. Its now gotten very big. Is it best to trim it in the fall once I bring it in or is it better to wait until spring. Love watching your video's. Keep them up. Alex

Hi Bill! I've always found Bougainvilleas fascinating and their colors calming. I've seen them around but started loving them when I was trying to revive a few plants where I used to live and succeeded in bringing them back to life. Anyways, I am from Sri Lanka and yes, sun and humidity year round - perfect to grow these beautiful babies. Keeping long story short, can you please advise me on how to care for a very young bougainvillea? i bought it recently and still haven't transferred into a pot. Hope you read this on time and look forward to hearing from you. Cheers! M.

could I use the trimmings from pruning as cuttings and make more plants for free?
-
Can you show a picture of your plant now?
-
did it grow back ???
-
may I know the name of the chemicals in a bottle that was used before propagating bougainvillea,is it a rooting hormones?

I wait for the bougainvillea to completely stop flowering before i prune all throughout. I have observed that it stunts the growth of the plant in terms of it's flowering for next time if i prune even in it's late stage of bloom

That was a lovely colour, what was the name of the Bougainvillea please?, I have just bought one here in the U.K its name is "Barbara Kast" it looks as though it may be the same as the one you are showing?

I live just North of Houston in Texas. This year I bought some bougainvillea in orange (coral), Pink, white with pink tips, amethyst, and Hot Pink. Some in baskets, and others in pots. When I get ready to winterize, I plan to heavily prune them and put them in the garage. I guess my question is...Does the color of the bracts matter in the winterizing or pruning process? Thanks for sharing your gardening/plant knowledge! It's very much appreciated! :)
