Propagating Hardy Kiwi ~ Spectacular Results!
Tips, Tricks
I'm propagating Hardy Kiwi and the results are spectacular! Check out the root system on these tiny cuttings. I was amazed... (you can probably tell that in the video.) Now... many people have never even heard of Hardy Kiwi so let me tell you about them. They are kiwifruit without the fuzzy skins. They are small and are eaten like grapes... no peeling! They have the same kiwi flavor, but unlike fuzzy kiwi, they can be grown in most climates. A mature Hardy Kiwi vine can produce up to 100 lbs of fruit, so they're PERFECT for the Backyard Homestead. The problem with growing regular fuzzy kiwis is...they can't take the cold weather. Therefore, they must be grown in warm climates like New Zealand. That's NOT the case with Hardy Kiwi. They can take the cold winters, so they're right for most areas. If you like the Kiwi taste, but hate to have to peel them (like ME) these may be right for you. So, check out this video and see the results that I have from propagating Hardy Kiwi. Kiwi fruits are vigorous plants that need plenty of space. They should be planted 3-4.5m (10-15ft) apart. Plants start to produce fruit three to four years after planting.
Self-fertile cultivars are ideal where there is space for only one plant. Otherwise for successful pollination both female and male (non-fruiting) plants should be planted. One male plant can pollinate up to eight females and should be sited 60cm (2ft) away from one of the females.
Kiwi fruits require a sheltered sunny position, preferably a south- or west-facing wall, although they can be grown in the open in milder areas. Young shoots are extremely vulnerable to frost damage in the spring and may require protection.
They grow best in a fertile, well-drained slightly acid soil which is rich in organic matter. -
What condition were the cuttings in when you took them? My friends have 3 different variety of vines and I'm not sure when to take the cuttings. I was going to wait till spring.

Are you talking about Kiwifruit as a Kiwi is a Bird Native to New Zealand

Im growing kiwi fom store bought fruit, is there a way to tell if they are male or female and need polinating?

Hello I have one called and Isaiah as it produces without a second plant I also take cuttings I use a different medium than you do and I've had no problem growing it I also sell them. Because of the fact that you don't need the hassle of finding a second plant. I think that having a Kiwi plant on your property is an absolute must. It's right up there with having grapes.

We planted two of these and they are real triffids - spreading like mad and we are going to have to prune them back this autumn as a lot of leaf but not a great deal of fruit. What surprises us is that the plants survive the Polish winter (down to -20 to -25 degrees) - some growth dies but not too much.
