Can you just put the dried basil in spice jars in the spice rack rather than freezing? My freezer space is premium.
-
how do you hang dry basil if you want to avoid microwave?
-
My way is to rough chop it when fresh in a blender with coconut oil and then fill icetrays with the mixture. Once set in the freezer I put them all into a ziplock bag and use a block or two when I need it

microwaveing herbs is not good I'm sorry) :
-
Have you tried to dry it with a salad spinner?
-
Great - EXCEPT FOR PUTTING THE BASIL IN THE SINK!! The average viewer's kitchen sink IS NOT sufficiently clean enough for this. YUCK!!!!

I just found your channel last weekend and am really enjoying all your videos. This is probably in the comments somewhere (haven't read them all), but after washing my basil I used my salad spinner to help with the drying versus blotting. Worked pretty well. I'm now letting them dry completely and will be using the microwave! Thanks for all your excellent tips!

Hi love your videos. I dry my basil in the oven. When it crumbles it sort of feels like fish food is it supposed to feel that way? Also how do I know if I'm over or under drying it? Thanks!!

Does this work on any plant or is it just herbs

I experimented a few months back with drying basil due to hearing various opinions on which way was best. I took some leaves and placed in the oven (on parchment paper) at lowest heat with door ajar, checking every 10 minutes. Some others were dried in the microwave at a low setting, checked every five minutes (or less). And the third drying method was placing the stem in a brown paper bag, allowing it to dry (took 7 days). What I did was take a sample of each dried leaf and tasted it without adding anything.
I found that the most flavorful basil came from the air dry method! While it may be convenient to microwave or oven dry, it was not as flavorful, as you are cooking out the essential oils. Yes, the microwave retains the nice green color but what good is if you have leached out the flavor and have to make up for it by adding more basil to your dishes to achieve the desired taste?
So while the microwave and oven are convenient, I won't sacrifice flavor.
Try it yourself and you will notice a huge difference in flavor. -
Love your video great tips

I watched a video on u tube to put it in a paper sack poke holes throughout and let it dry in a warm dark place for a few weeks, I did that, once it was completely dry I put it in a mason jar and used my food saver (the kind that removes all air out of plastic bags, also has a tube to attach the mason jar lid to remove air as well) yes it's about a hundred dollars but since your using it to take air out of every type of food to freeze or refrigerate and it has the added bonus to take air out of mason jars. your food, herbs, even things like nuts, cereal, absolutely everything you consume last so much longer. the basil in paticular I've kept adding too and have had it for years, not one drop of nutrients lost or flavor. it's an investment but so well worth it.

thanks for the video. I want to try this this year. Would you tell me what power level you used to microwave the basil?
In a site I was reading earlier they said 3 minutes on low. So I'm getting confused...lol -
