You know that is fantastic. To go to the effort to actually show your kids where things come from and how things grow. I think these days most people are so busy they barely have time to give their kids a verbal explanation. Good for you. I'm sure your kids will reap huge benefits from your efforts.

We will not get a lot of oats out of the patch...I like to grow things with my kids to teach them where their food comes from and how it grows....Plus I just like growing different things......It will be fun to harvest it with the kids....Last year we grew cotton....Kids had no idea that there shirts were made from something you can grow.....;-)
-
That sure is interesting. I wouldn't think that you could get enough oats in a small patch like that. I'm used to seeing a whole quarter growing oats not just a little patch or especially in pots. I will be interested to see the progression of your oat crop. That sure is cool.

Nice cart around the garden....It has had just about everything in it.....Kids love being pulled around in it....Sorry to hear about the fall garden but at least you have that stadium doom thing to plant in....;-)...."freshly turned soil"....LOL....I did think those were oddly shaped small taters from last year....Better go tell the wife to throw the stew out I put on this morning.....LOL....Thanks Bobby as always.....

So that's where my little pull cart went..and you painted it red ! LOL...we have a yellow one just like it. It's real easy to miss that okra, it just blends into the plant so well. My fall garden is a no-go, just rained so much and I don't want to plant it late. I'll do some cabbage in the GH later on. I think I heard Woody say something about "freshly turned soil." Cat's just love that stuff. Early morning in the garden..awesome. Nice job Tim.

Thanks......as I commented with Dale it is a crop.....Last year was the first time for me and I grew them in the spring.....Did real good for me but as I have read and researched it is a fall crop here in the south.....Going to try it this year in the fall and see what happens...It makes a great plant in pots....Just doesn't like to dry out......

I grew oats last year in big pots to show my kids where Oatmeal came from....Had really good success with it....Did find out that it takes a lot of oats to make oatmeal....;-)....What I didn't know last year is that oats is a fall crop in the south.....It will winter over as long as temps don't get below 20 degrees.....We usually don't get much colder here than the upper 20's.....Thanks Dale...

We are in North Texas close to the Oklahoma border.....We love okra.....Towards the end of the season we do tend to get sick of it.....It is slimy if you boil it but fried is really good just not that healthy.....I have seen some people dehydrate it and turn it into okra chips....Have never tried it.....

Very pleasant video, it was just lovely spending the morning with you in the garden. I have the same question as dalecalder 2003. Are the winter oats a green manure or do you plant them as a crop?
-
You certainly do need rain, don't you. The winter oats is that a green manure to improve the soil or is it a crop?
-
Can't beat fried okra.....I like frying okra, onions and squash all battered together.....Makes for an interesting mix.....I bet your chickens just love that worm.....They didn't fight over it did they?? ;-)
-
We eat the okra several different ways....We fry it......We also cook it a lot we do green beans....a little bit of bacon grease and water......Sometimes can it pickled in vinegar if we have enough.....
-
I have fought nut grass for years....Grass clippings work great too....Chickens love going through just about anything I throw at them.....
-
Thanks.....Yes it is sometimes difficult to get things done with everything that goes on......
-
Thanks......:-)
-
I hope it last too....I really hope we have a long fall....Last year was the heat wave and then turned cold almost over night.....we didn't even have a fall..,..
-
We usually see first frost around end of November so we have a little while yet.....Thanks

Thanks for sharing your video. Would you share what you do with your winter oats? I am thinking about planting some oats (hullless) but still not sure what to do with them after that. Thanks.
