Planting Tomatoes: Using Eggshell Calcium
Tips, Tricks
I have several videos over the past few years about using organic eggshell calcium in the tomato planting hole. This year is no different. You can see me mix the eggshells with vinegar to help make the calcium more plant available. My garden this year is a little bit crowded with lots of potted trees, Onions, Beets, Carrots, Kale, Peas, Kohlrabi, and more. Most of this is just about finished for the year and will soon be removed, but until then I need to find a place to plant the tomatoes. In the middle of the video you will also find out how I separate two plants that were started in the same pot. This method will allow me to save and use both plants individually with little stress. You get to see an up close view of the soil too. It's maturing nicely as the organic material breaks down and the soil life takes over. There are lots of worms! So I'm wondering if you've tried growing some tomatoes with you "calcium mix" an some without, to compare the results. I ask you that 'cause my wife, with more experience than me, has always insisted that transplants do better when mixed with soil/compost and bone meal.
After several years of viewing "magical" solutions for veggie gardening, I started question any and all garden advice that I viewed. I wondered, "does it really work like that say it does?" Well, I started doing my own experiments, starting with the "bone meal" theory. I found (over two seasons) that with or without bone meal, my transplants did equally well. Sigh, my wife continues to insist that the "bone meal" approach works.
I think these practices are much like a religion. You gotta have faith, I guess. For me though, its "show me the money" - I wanna see the evidence before I spend my time and resources on something that's proven.
Other than that, I like your videos: good, practical garden advice. Thanks. -
Great video. Great garden. New subscriber. God bless you.

Yep, I do the same thing with those pots because I find they also tend to mold. Your garden is looking good.

Looking good Blake. So wish we had some of that Texas sun and warmth up here in WV.

I finally got my tomatoes in the ground recently. Exciting times!

Blake, the gardens are looking good already. I really like following your gardening journey. Thank you for sharing.

You are so right about the peat pots & pellets. I found unless they were kept wet,(and I mean sopping wet) they didn't decompose for 3-4 years . I also cut several slits in the pots to make it easier for the roots to get thru.
If you can beg/borrow a chipper/shredder, those leaves will disappear like magic! And wow do they help enrich the soil! One year, I collected so many, it took 2 years to use them all in my small garden, lol. -

Blake eggshells treated with vinegar don't release elemental calcium which is the only way plants can take them up.

I have the dilemma of too many tomatoes for my garden too. I've decided to plant a couple in the front yard along the driveway. :D I use egg shells in my tomato holes too but never tried it with vinegar.

Now I don't feel so bad transplanting my garden slowly.

What is your zone? I'm sitting here in zone 7a drooling because I've got some of the best tomato and pepper starts I've ever grown from seed. Just waiting. It's killing me. LOL But, we are still in the 40's at night and sometimes upper 30's. So, I don't feel safe yet even with our last frost date as 4/15 and 70 plus degree days. I'm going to wait until 4/30 to transplant them into the ground and outside containers. I've got SO MANY pepper and tomato plants that have been repotted and some that need it. I can't wait for my first garden tomato to slice. LOL It's like being a kid a Christmas. Loved the video.
Also, the only thing I use those little peat pellet things for is HERBS. And I always peel them off. I still find them in my compost bin sometimes. HMMMMM. I just save little pots and then I have a lady down the road that has a small nursery. She gives pots of different sizes to use. After one use, being commercial, she usually doesn't use them anymore. So, I'm grateful that I have so many to use. I got tomato and pepper plants coming out of my ears. But.....I think it's a good thing. IF I could only plant them....now..... =/ And yes, I have NO idea WHERE I'm going to plant them all. LOL
Happy Gardening! -
