Leguminous plants like green bean, string bean, cow pea and pigeon peas can be planted in the area or location you will soon plant dark leafy vegetables. The leguminous plants takes in the nitrogen from the atmosphere and stores in the root nodules. In the root nodules has a bacteria called "Rhizobium" which converts nitrogen from the air into ammonium which can then be taken up by the dark leafy vegetable.Ammonium is the same form as ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate fertilizer, except it's organic.
