Planting in March 2012 zone 6a: Say what?!?
Tips, Tricks
Okay, I'm planting. Yeah, it's insane, but so is this weather we're having. The orchard folks just north of us are really fretting as their apple trees (especially) have "green budded" already. This is a month ahead of "normal". That means there's a huge danger of frost damage in the next 6 or so weeks leading to little or no fruit. Well, getting a jump on working up the dirt just wasn't enough and so I decided to plant spinach, carrots, and snow peas. I have an abundance of seeds and a couple of row covers, so maybe I'll get lucky. Here goes. . . . . Wish me luck.

Wow! Just watched your video and I you're having some fantastic results in your containers! My only thought was -- and you may already be doing this -- don't forget about making your own compost to add to those containers from time to time. I am curious what you are going to do on that privacy fence with the strawberries --- will they get enough sun? (Our privacy fences is on our southern property line and it shades everything on my side.) Good job!

Hey snowpony, I started planting in the middle of march too. I am in the city so i am doing raised beds and pots in my back yard. I have one blueberry bush and it has done great. check out my plants on my channel. Please subscribe. I have a strawberry project coming soon and preparing for a LARGE anount of veggies next year. love your videos. Keep them coming. Thanks

Spinach and carrots should be fine with frost...

Funny you should say Spring is early. I am thinking that too... in the low desert of S. Calif.

if you take plastic jugs .. ie 2 liter soda bottles and milk jugs cut the bottoms out and set the jugs over the young plants when you plant early. The jugs act like tiny green houses and frost covers. You can remove them later on if required.

Go for it!No different from playing the lottery:)except yummy things to eat.Everythings out early here too.I had hollyhock plants grow all winter and my roses never dropped their leaves.I'm skipping the seed trays this year and going to plant straight in the ground (this weekend if it doesn't rain, again). We've had mid 80's here for a week! It's went from winter to summer here.

It's extraordinary - we are currently experiencing the same unusually high temperatures here in Poland - our thermometer was showing 35 in the sun yesterday. We feel the same about frost - the rule here is only plant (not under cover) after 15th May.Sounds like you are keeping a gardening diary (?) I started one last year and very useful record.

I'm starting my seeds indoors now, trying to upload to youtube, but having some trouble with the uploading process, lol

I'm wanting to get some things in the garden to! I'm hoping to start some spinach and carrots tomorrow.

Good luck. A few of my fruit tree were budding out, then it's snowing today. I'm in the Nevada desert at 5000 ft. We need the moisture but not today :)

we planted a few days ago, but we're in the southeast. Still at least 2 weeks before the last frost date.

hey lady...same goes here. we have already made record breaking highs here. ( i live in the south) hehe. it has been in the 80s here the past week or two. we are even putting honey supers on. checked bees yesterday. they are already putting up honey...yayyyy should get lots of honey this year. we have started tomato and peppers in the greenhouse. they are about ready to transplant. i have a video of what they look like now. also have videos of my mini farm too.....

2 years ago my plum & apple trees were all flowered out, then one night we had a hard frost. No fruit at all that year! My neighbor just put up a 80' greenhouse and moved everything in.

@Michigansnowpony That's my concern too, we had a freeze last year at the end of June or start of July. Almost all our snow is gone and we are about 10-20 degrees warmer for this time of year. If it wasn't for the rain the goats would be outside.

There goes your April first record! I know what you mean, seeds are cheap and the weather is nice, so radishes, spinach and some brussel sprouts (never tried to grow those) are in the ground. On the plus side, I now have an excuse to go and buy more seeds--I used some up! Keep us posted.

I think I'll wait a couple of weeks LOL. I'm busy trying to expand my beds anyway. (Well, maybe I'll try some lettuce soon)

I'm in zone 4 and close to 5. I am tempted to do some yard work like uncovering some plants but I'm pretty sure we will get some winter yet. But it is really tempting. It's been in the 70s here in Minnesota too. I do have seeds started in the house.

Go for it, girl!! =) I know I did..but I'm one of those dastardly southern gardeners, (Mua ha ha ha) hehehe..I've planted so far: onions, garlic, cabbage, snow peas, lettuce varieties, spinach..& soon I will start my zukes & other squashes, & maybe even my watermelon & cantelope. (evil wicked grin) haha

Risk or reward how the mind it will toil With starting this early to till in the soil Will you have 2 growing seasons to which you can boast Or just early failures you have to compost Some post it's early you should sit and wait But I say go try it who cares about the date Just do us a favor if you do plant today Keep the info and updates growing our way :-{}
