Planting Goji ( Wolf ) Berries in Raised Beds in the Alberta Urban Garden Lycium barbarum
Tips, Tricks
Goji Berries are one of the coolest perennials I am adding to my garden this year. I will be planting them in a raised bed in front of the Grapes. Goji Berries or Wolf Berries are said to have high levels of anti oxidants and contain a high proportion of vitamins. They are traditionally used in Chinese medicine to treat a large number of issues. That said most of the benefits are unconfirmed. It is important to note that Goji Berries should not be consumed in large quantities and it you are on any medication make sure to consult your doctor prior to consuming. Goji berries are a wooded vine that do require some support. They reproduce through seeds and suckers so when you select the location in your garden you will want to make sure the suckers can be controlled much like a raspberry. They should produce fruit in the next year or two and as always I will show you how they do when we get there! Some of my favorite childhood memories are of gardening with my parents and brothers. This channel is about low cost organic urban gardening in zone 3. I am by no means an expert gardener however I love to share my experiments and journey garden year round. All three of my goji berry plants leaves are turning yellow and falling off. Do you have any ideas? They are in plastic pots using Dr. Earth potting mix and covered with wood chips. One person on youtube said that the plant loses it leaves in exchange for fruiting. I am not sure about that though.

Hi Stephen
I'm a bit late commenting on this video, but I've only recently discovered your channel and still working my way through them all.
I would love to see an update on your gojis to see how they are doing this year (2016). Last fall I took some cuttings from my in-laws in Vancouver and have been nurturing them in a pot so will finally plant this year in my yard here in Calgary.
His goji patch is impressively productive. But then he is an old hand at gardening so has a bit more experience than me -
i've wondered about using crushed glass in the garden! have you done any videos on that in particular? or any links or search engine queries to suggest?

You can dry the berries and put them into your soup. You don't need to kill aphids if you have lady bugs in your garden!

I grow the Goji as well - you can use the soil you recommend but the more alkaline the better it does in terms of fruiting. I've been told not to use peat moss and a nitrogen rich soil. Use more char and wood ash to get the ph higher.

I have had a goji berry in a pot for a while and it hasnt done all that well. I plan to make it as part of the understory in a small food dorest I will be planting so this is some incentive to get into action :)

How the Goji berry look like.

Am sure the plant has bounced back nicely for you Stephen.. Need to get a few more perennials into our patch..
Thanks.. -

Thanks, Stephen. Really appreciate this. I don't know why but I was thinking Goji berries would not be hardy so far north and have not considered it though I really wanted them. Opens up new possibilities. My thoughts on health benefits are that if it is known to be high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals it should be beneficial. Though, as you say, Those on meds should be careful. It is POSSIBLE that it may contain a natural chemical that will adversely react with medications or throw off the balance rather than the vitamins and antioxidants. Example, I am working on a video for Hawthorne berries used as a natural high blood pressure medication. I can't remember the name of the chemical it contains offhand but it can adversely affect one if they are on HBP meds. Reason for the video is that 1) I have an English Hawthorne on my property and 2) Five years ago HBP almost killed me and 3) the chemical meds I was on ALSO almost killed me. For 1 1/2 years I was one messed up puppy!!!

Thanks for sharing your perennials in your garden. I agree that they are amazing to have in your yard.

rootbound plants tend to strangle themselves, if the roots aren't separated.

yeah. our is a floppy, spindley little booger.

I hope it grow plentifully for you +Stephen Legaree!

My little goji from Dale was standing on his own until recently. Ray said he's done them before but found they just flop over. I am anti-staking, but I guess I'll have to do so with this one. You should get fruit next year non?
I forgot about the suckers. I wonder if a cluster of them if enabled to grow large can be wrapped with string or put in a tomato/peonea cage? Time will tell eh! A bunch of us are in the learning curve on this one. -
everything looks great

I almost planted Goji this year, but other things got in the way. Maybe next year! :))

Really nice Stephen! Can I ask you what kind of glass product you have put on top and where did you find it? Preparing for next winter's bug attack LOL
