Planting Fall Garlic for Huge Spring Garlic Bulbs
Tips, Tricks
This video gives you the basic for planting fall garlic. Garlic need a couple weeks of 40 degree temperature to mature properly over its growing period. I live in Maryland (Zone 7). A great time plant garlic is in the fall. It will get the weeks of cold weather it needs to form great bulbs in the late spring. A late September/October planting of garlic will let the cloves establish themselves and winter-over safely.

hey there, so when do we plant the garlic bulbs in zone 7 for best success?

Why didn't you say "welcome to the rusted garden" or "if you enjoyed this video..."?

Fall planted garlic is ready in the late springish. When the leaves yellow a bit and drop. I am still looking for more information on the exact ready time too. But that is the general idea. Plus, if you planted a lot, you can just pull it as needed. You can use the leaves and immature bulbs just as well. That's what I do.

When will they be ready to harvest? I planted some in October, live in lower WI. I'm trying to find more info on the nrxt steps to take. Any ingo woild help, thanks!

Ah I wondered what the standard brand was called. I hear it is what comes out of California. Hmmm. I've been doing 4 inches but I often plant what too many cloves. So I use them when they are still immature and tend to take them every other. Maybe that explains way some cloves were bigger. Some got 8 inches of space. I'll take notice this time and see. The deep raised bed loose soil made a big difference for me.

Those are probably artichoke softnecks. It seems like to get maximum bulb size, they will need around 6 inches, and the clove size you start with also seems to matter a lot. It looks like you have the right idea with the loosened soil since it will be much easier for them to dig their roots into the ground as far as they can while the soil is still loose. I used to grow them around 3-4 inches apart until I noticed that the beds with the wider spacing tended to have enormous bulbs.

You can. Somthing like a 5 gallon paint bucket size. Plant them like 2 inches from the side or in the middle. If you dont get really bad winters you can go smaller. Its good to be new. Makes things fun.

I think it is fine. Its pretty hardy and the greens last for a while. I would leave the greens alone. Let the energy go to the bulb. If you get a lot of greens, pick a few leaves.

Plant all that and get some store garlic too if you have room. See how it does compared to sprouted garlic.

Those 40 pounds bags of dirt can give you a workout.

i did the same about a week ago and 1 of the dozen sprouted 3 days later.Maybe because i left it in the frig overnight? Have you had this happen? should i leave it or harvest it in a couple months? Any who, i really enjoy you videos. Thanks
