These plants love cool weather! This is an all organic planting of radishes (by seed). Lettuces, Kale, Mustard Greens, Beets and Peas go in as transplants. I am using bagged compost and organic fertilizer. I show you the ground prep, fertilizing and planting of these crops. Lots of tips as I talk. I put in some kale and spinach starts into a fake half barrel container. It got the mild that grows in the seedling containers. I just scraped off the mold and sprinkled cinnamon. The spinach isn't growing well, the kale is a bit damaged on lower leaves (not sure if it's due to the mold
Or bugs). I think maybe it was overwatered so I also pulled back on watering. Do you have suggestions for containers that are subject to lots of rain to keep the soil from compacting. I pulled the half barrel into a covered area to be able to get less rain and hopefully a sunnier location
Not tons of sunshine now in our area so we shall see what grows. I planted beets in the ground earlier and they are doing great. We are growing cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower that supposedly overwinter but I'm less confident. Still need to get my garlic in. When do you start your starts or so you buy them for planting in September? -
thank you for reply for more container gardening. I just remembered something important that I hope you will share to your followers. there is a lot of info out there using cayenne, hot sauce, chili powder to try to get rid of squirrels etc. when reading an article on getting rid if squirrels it stated that using this method WILL KILL BEES AND BUTTERFLIES. it was the first I ever read this. if this is true I feel it is important to get out to all gardeners. since you have a good following and are in touch with others like Calkim you might like to pass it on. By the way I also read the only way to get rid of squirrels is to catch them and take them somewhere and let them go. Now all I have to find out is how far I need to take them to let them go so they don't come back.
thank you. -
Your videos are the best help I have found. Thanks!

I love all of your videos; they've helped me a great deal as a beginning veggie gardener. The "Understanding ..." series was extremely helpful. I have to say that I'm happy to hear you finally catch yourself saying double-u only two times and adding the third one.

Thanks for this video. I follow some of your advice. I am already eating and juicing vegetables from my fall garden. I started in mid August in Virginia zone 7b. thanks again for your videos. they are very helpful.

could you do more on container gardening? how often fertilizer, container size for different vegetables, can you mix different veggies in same container (taller/shorter). I live in apartment and have a deck so can't do a lot. sun about 5 hrs daily. my biggest problem this year was squirrels, the ate about 95% of my tomatoes. tried garlic, human hair, bought repellent, finally read the only way to get rid of squirrels is to trap and release them somewhere else. live in zone 6b in Connecticut. love your videos, they have helped a lot. thanks

Hi Gary
Do you use a grow light and heating pad on your seedlings? -
how long does it take for kale to sprout
-
what store and where in the store do you find these items clearance so much?
-
I recently read that radishes and potatoes like Phosporous in order to grown strong root fruit. So Bone Meal or Rock Phosphate are what I am trying this fall. And yes, too much nitrogen focuses energy on the plant above the ground, rather than the root below the ground.

Fall planting is a treat compared to summer planting down here in zone 8b. Gulf coast summers are brutal.

Thanks for the tips and sharing them

Awesome.Good weekend to-do list. I love peas! especially edible pod snow peas. I had good french breakfast radish the 1st year I tried, not much luck since. Will try again. I have never grown broccoli but (like tomatoes) I hear home grown is a world of difference vs store bought

what kind of peas did you plant? English or cow peas?

Hi, Gary.
Did you harden your seedlings off before putting them into the raised beds?
