Planting Carrots in Spring and a Few Tips...
Tips, Tricks
I am planting carrots in the Spring Garden and show a few tips that have worked good for me. I loosen soil as deep as I can with a tiller and a garden fork. Using seed starting mix to cover seeds will help the little seeds make it up. After I water them in I cover the seeds with an old board to retain moisture. I will check under board everyday and remove it as soon as the first seeds start to germinate.

Yes I have watched the Back to Eden film.....I currently have a small plot that is 12 feet by 12 feet that is a back to Eden garden.....I did it last year and have let it sit for about 6 months.....I have planted some lettuces and spinach in it for the spring garden....I look forward to the results....Thanks....

Hey Tim, I was wondering if you ever looked into the "Back to Eden" gardening method. If you have no idea what I'm talking about you can search Back to Eden Film on Google I would like to know your thoughts. Peace, Nick

The board will keep the soil pretty moist until seeds germinate.....After two days now I checked under to see if it was still moist and was moist and warm under the board....Perfect to get those little seeds up.....

Collards can grow in the spring garden but you better act fast....they don't like heat....we still have the collards growing from the fall garden and have enjoyed them so much....hopefully we can get some going this spring to can for this summer.....

really good video thank you for sharing Mercedes

are collards a spring crop? and when is it best to plant a spring garden

I planted in the fall too. I have very small carrots still in the ground. It has to be something I'm doing or not doing. Back to the drawing board. I can only get beets to grow in the spring. I've tried fall beets for years and can't get the suckers to sprout. We have some volunteer in the spring the spots we planted fall seeds. So I know it's not the seed. Must be the soil temperatures like you said.

Thanks.....:-)

Thanks Navajopa.....I am a slow learner sometimes and learn the hard way from my mistakes...I figured out that there was a lot more to gardening then throwing seed down...there are so many factors to everything we do in the garden.....I used to follow the dates suggested but every year the climate is different....that is why I now try to use conditions in the garden as the rule of thumb instead of the suggested dates...

I do my very best in the with carrots in the fall garden....I still have the carrots from fall in the garden....our soil does not freeze here so we let them over winter and pick them as we need them.....In the spring it is a different story...carrots mature anywhere from 60-80 days....The two varieties I planted will be ready to harvest in about 70 days...we will harvest them and freeze and can them then..I keep a calendar and record success and failures..I have learned a lot from past mistakes.

Thanks.....I love the youtube community.....It serves so many purposes.....

Good idea on wetting the board down.....I think first time I check for germination I will wet down.....Thanks for the tip....

We do have chance of frost until mid March.....Carrots are pretty forgiving with cold weather.....I still have a row of carrots that have over wintered nicely in the garden.....my wife goes out and picks them when she needs some...

I love this video. So many videos out there just show how to plant something. Information such as soil temperatures and approximately which month you typically plant in is helpful. The only other information I would like to hear is when do you pull them? How long do you let them grow and do you leave any for seed? Some of us really need thing spelled out. I've never had success with carrots or beets, I believe because I don't fully understand when I need to be planting them and pulling them. Thx

Hi Tim, I've used the board trick also. I will also hose down/soak the board with water before placing it. Enjoyed your video thanks for sharing!
