I love the way bamboo looks around water myself. 👍🏼 I never realized there were different kinds of bamboo. That explains this...about 20 years ago when I lived at home I picked three little bamboo trees from a creek and brought them home and now they are probably 300 bamboo trees about 50 ft tall in my Dads back yard. Lol. Crazy!! 😃

Hey Eric, I am just curious, is the clumping bamboo you are holding in the video Bambusa Oldhamii?
-
been playing with the idea of bamboo, but planning on planting it in a container which i could then partially bury. What ml. liner is thick enough not to be penetrated?
-
I love bamboo...I seen they are planted around in water features in Disneyland Adventureland.

If I said this around my father, he'd likely smack me in the back of the head, but I actually love bamboo! I think it's beautiful, adds a nice acoustic, and can make your pond feel much more natural when done correctly. Great stuff!!

yes! the running bamboo are invasive! i had a small eco pond where running bamboo was set. i would have to wipe out hundreds of square foot on bamboo every yr
-
the smaller bamboo(one with the ridge) are also the stronger type of bamboo. I used those to make fishing rods back in china. I would definitely plan bamboo near the pond.

I have bamboo next to my pond. I build a container using concrete blocks. they are super strong "grass" lol .

One neighbor planted some bamboo in their backyard. So our next door neighbor saw it and decided to follow their example. I don't think either neighbor knew anything about running vs clumping bamboo. Soon we had bamboo taking over half of OUR yard. It became a long summer struggle to chop down each shoot as it broke through the ground. I personally like bamboo, but I don't know if I'll ever convince my husband to do even the clumping kind thanks to the neighbor. Haha

We 💖 bamboo!!

Eric, I think that book was making a statement to warn customers about pond builders that should not be building ponds. I know that you would provide your customers with ample directions regarding bamboo care and prevention of bamboo invasion. Not all pond builders or landscapers in general discuss the care of different plants when they introduce them into your yard. Case in point: My landscaper put a TON of Russian Sage shrubs in my yards. They are beautiful and grow quickly to give the yard a "mature" look within a year or two. However, they are invasive. I have had to pull almost all of them out because they were taking over my yard. I only have one or two at the moment.
Certainly the book could have worded things a bit more precise. For example the book should have said make sure your contractor discusses the pros and cons of planting invasive plants such as bamboo or cattails in or near your pond..... Again, not all pond builders or landscapers are created equally. Home owners have an obligation to research what they are getting into and I believe many times we home owners don't live up to our responsibility either. Just my thoughts. I don't want to see you miss out on some hidden gem of info because an author has poor writing skills. ;-) -
Hey, I have been watching your periscopes and didn't even know you had a channel. I'm here now and looking forward to seeing your shows!

My Dad and step-mom had bamboo (the bad kind) in the front of their house in San Diego (Actually Spring Valley). It was a huge pain in the butt! Parts of the house were made of bamboo too (interior doors and some trim work). The house caught on fire and was down to the ground in less than 10 minutes, partly due to the bamboo that fueled it.
That being said, I really love the big clumping type of Bamboo and would love to have some near a pond in the future. I love the look of it. I also like the black bamboo, but I don't think it's the clumping type, so I would have to think about how to contain it before planting it anywhere. -
What about reeds? I planted between the rocks and in some close by areas and they're thriving, but the ones on the ground directly are traveling. Should I worry? Remove and replant with a rhizome barrier as described?

I had few bamboos, aurea, black and few others but one winter they all frozen (they were in containers). Now i have just aurea, about 3m tall but will get some other , big, variety which will go by the terrace of the pond.

Scary part about bamboo. Is escaping into native nature areas and pressuring out everything else. here in Indiana we have many invasives ( all Asian ) Thats just destroyed 100s of thousands of acers of land. so aggressive it creates dead zones of canopy and dirt. Asian honeysuckle, tree of heaven , Japanese silt grass etc.
