i bought seeds from the real seed company and they suggested squash be planted at least 4 ft part. If they're planted too close they will produce all male flowers and not fruit.

Good tip about the stick, simple but effective :)

Would you treat candy roasters the same way?

Back again Claire. It is finally that time of the year for me to sow seeds and plants for Spring. I forgot about the stick so I am so pleased to come back and check. Everything going in this week.

I start mine off in the greenhouse in half toilet rolls, and when all sign of frost has past I plant them outside, I just let them trail over the ground. That way they slow down weeds growing through. If however, you are worried about rabbits and mice or have limited space them build a frame for them to grow up. Old fence trellis works very well.

They are to retain the water in the soil.

As a first timer it is great to see in advance what I can expect of a squash seedling and when it is best to put it out. Thanks for that and about how not to lose them.
