Aquarium Tips and Tricks- Planted Aquarium Tips It is important to not over think your aquariums. There are some general rules out there that aren't entirely bad, but they don't need to be followed exactly. Every planted tank and fishtank is different. No two are really all that much alike. So you have to treat each tank differently. People always ask me how much light to put on their tanks. Everyone wants more light. The reality is that you might not need all that much more light. The one watt per gallon rule is nice, but it isn't set in stone. Same thing with the one inch of fish per gallon of water rule. These rules are just general guidelines. This also holds true for those of you who are adding fertilizers to the tank. Yes, the bottle will give you instructions on how to do it, but look at your plants and see what they are telling you (not necessarily what the manufacturer recommends). I am not suggesting that everyone go power load their tanks, but just to take a look at what they are doing and if it is working. Roll with it. If it isn't working, be willing to come off the rules a little. A good example of this was a guy who told me he had a 20 gallon tank, but that he was feeding his fish 3 times a day. He had a big algae problem. I told him to stop feeding for 3 days and cut off his lights. He was over feeding and had too much waste in his water. There are too many variables going into a fishtank to just be stuck in a set of rules. The best rule I can give you is look at your plants and fish first, then make adjustments. And putting dirt in your tanks rules! :) This tank is fully running on a dirted substrate, if you want to learn how to do it, download the guide at http://www.howtosetupaplantedtank.com/ An easy way to get your tank bumping! http://www.dustinsfishtanks.com/top-10-tips/ Welcome to Dustin's Fish Tanks YouTube Channel. It would be useful if you could think about what you are going to say before you start shooting. Rambling sloppy difficult to follow language. No credibility

Slow down dude...and when is the last time you feed your poor fish?!!!!
-
What are you feeding the fishes

LOL I just did a dirted tank now and calculated my watts per gallon to 1.48 or something to that effect and I was like I might be short cos everyone says at least 2.25 to 3watts per gallon. Well goin to bend the rules then and give it a try worst case scenario, add more light.

Dustin I think That's one of the best tips I've heard on your videos. U are absolutely right, planted fishtank is something u cannot measure. Its about to find that balance between fish, and plants and actually everything. Shame I can't do it very right so far. But I learn and learn. Good Stuff dude.

Laughing at the goldfish line: that's a lot more inch of fish! I've always lived by the inch-per-gallon rule in an attempt to keep myself from taking on too much. I'm fresh into fishkeeping again after not doing it for years, so to know there is some wiggle room in the rules is good to know. Thanks for this video!

Your totally right. I have nano tanks and one is around 10 l full. I clean it out 3 times a week and its fun, yet people are still there complaining that fish cant be kept below 15L or even 30L -.-
