Everyone asks me about different plants and how to keep them. The biggest trick to keep grow aquarium plants is to have good roots in your planted tank. The roots are how the plants eat. Make it easy for them to eat and it will be easy for them to grow. Too many people want to talk about lighting their tanks and using CO2. Until recently, I had less than 1 watt per gallon on my 220. I have no CO2. Dirt is the key to a successful planted aquarium. If you want to know how to grow aquarium plants, the answer lies in how good your substrate is. I used dirt and recommend it, but don't take my word for it. Read the comments below. Seachem gave a talk about how plants absorb iron a few years back. They study plants all day long and gave the stat that plants grow 40-400 times more nutrients through their roots then their leafs and stems. Cool set up loving it! I have a question though, can you grow normal house plant's from seed this way?
-
Can I use cichlid sand or is it to fine?
-
I'm converting to dirt on a 20L puffer tank and a 40H community. Can I buy bulk red clay from places like Michael's? Is there something to look for in the clay ingredients other than iron?
-
from watching your videos, started with dirt and couldn't be happier. make sure you cap it though. made that mistake, never again.
-
got me thinking about trying dirt. do it in the dirt, root your plants? lol
-
Think about it like this: if you tear everything above the rhizome (main root) of the plant and put the roots back in the soil there's a great chance it will grow back. If there wasn't a root system but just leaves they would die soon. Kind if like putting a flower into water. It dies without its roots. The plant absorbs nutrition through the roots. The roots do the same thing as a stomach. What would you do with out your stomach? You would die.

Is there a way to have plants do well in standard blue rock gravel because I really like that color but don't wan't to switch to dirt. I started a new 5 galon tank with nothing but the rocks so far and a standard light have any recommendations?

Love my dirted tanks!!!

Hi Justin, Long time fan, and since you asked that I post a comment... I am posting it. I use dirt for growing plants in my aquarium. Mineralized Top Soil + Peat Moss (dusting on the bottom of the tank) before I put dirt in the tank then the substrate on top. I did this one my second tank, my first tank I put a little bit on each sides then substrate on top. those plants are booming. -waiting to see the new tanks growth.
-
Okay, so I'm finally convinced on dirted tanks. I've been a long time proponent of mineral and nutrient gravels, but dirt allows for a stronger root formation and from watching videos promotes lusher foliage. I've never done a major substrate conversion, and already have an established fish community of cichlids, balas and an emerald thai cat. Yeah crazy mix, but they work astoundingly well together. I dont know if i should partition the tank and do it in halves, or do it all at once..

Thanks for all you devote to the hobby. Two new plants, Narrow leaf chain sword & Wendtii sunset. Both came in a root starter block. Should I leave them in the root starter or pull them out of the block and plant the roots as deep as I can? 2 " of dirt capped with 2-3" of gravel. They have been in my 70 gal tank for a week now and seem to be doing OK. I want them to flourish as best as they can.

-

BTW do you use beneficial bacteria and benefical fungi? I have been using dr hornsby's or now advanced nutrients tarantula, pirhana, and voodoojuice...
-
being a professional int he horticulture field only certain types of plants require root trimming, some plants its essential you do not touch the roots it can put the plant in shock...its all about timing, age, and species...but roots are the only way to tell what is currently happening to plants, damage you see on plants is generally what damage was done some time prior...nice roots dustin!

I just started my first NPT dirt tank, and so far it's been great. I've got 1 T5 HO light over a 55 gallon, sitting directly on the top of the tank with a variety of low / medium / high light plants. I used the organic miracle grow from home depot as there is limited options in northern Alberta. All the plants at my LFS were dying / wilting so i had to make do with them. Hopefully the roots will explode and the plants will bounce back stronger than ever! PS: My name is Dustin too!
