Planning and Planting Fall and Winter Crops in the Alberta Urban Garden
Tips, Tricks
With winter fast approaching its time to plant our fall and winter plants. For the most part they are cold hardy leafy greens that we should be able to enjoy for months to come. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of gardening with my parents and brothers. This channel is about low cost organic urban gardening in zone 3. I am by no means an expert gardener however I love to share my experiments and journey garden year round. Please feel free to join the conversation and if you think you might like this channel subscribe. Have a great day! Great video! Eliott Coleman has some great material out there. I've got one of his other books-- the New Organic Grower. It's got some great information. Anyway, Looking forward to your videos about growing into winter!

Hope the grow well for you mate..
Would be interesting to see how some added thermal mass like +Gardening in Norway suggested would go for you..
Cheers.. -
Good luck with the cold frame can't wait to see how it does. I am fall gardening for the first time this year in zone 5. I've been looking at the book you mentioned along with a couple of other books and its amazing how much you can actually grow all year round with proper shelter. Growing in NB I never thought of gardening outside the regular summer season before.

Good update. I have been doing preparing for the fall some of the leaves are turning very early this year.

Hi Steven,
I just fished filming an episode on this very topic. :)
You've got some really healthy strawberries there in the back of this bed.
Thanks for sharing - I look forward to see in more.

I will be staying 'tuned' to your channel. :0) Good luck.

Looking forward to seeing the results!

Yeah, Stephen! Hoophouses work great for extending the growing season! Good luck with it, my friend!

I'm gonna have to ask for some seedlings. I'll trade you for some cabbage, corn, Brussels sprouts? Future considerations?

I got tons more hoop material if you need Stephen. Can I borrow your book dude? You got me interested in what I do out front. Southern exposure and free from the cold early winter NW wind. Cold wind makes a huge difference with the same veggies planted the same time!
I've had stuff wind free and sun exposed last weeks longer just by their locale! -
This is awesome. All the best. I will be doing my fall/winter garden here in zone 8.
It amazes me how many people think gardening is over wtih the last frost, even in my zone. -
This is a cool project, Stephen! Wish you good luck with it.
I was talking wiht my neighbour today, and the conversation was about how they managed to extend the growing seasons here 1500 years ago. Not much plastic at that time.. :)
Huge areas in Norway are moraine, so our soil is half mixed with boulders and stones. When working the soil at that time they often used a spade instead of a plow, without removing the boulders/stones in the beds. These stones stored a lot of thermal heat from the sun, and released much of it during the night, keeping the soil warm. By doing this they were able to extend their growing seasons. Smart people those old buggers. :)
Would have been a cool experiment to do, build a small hoophouse over some rocks, and plant into the soil between them, -just to see how the plants did through a winter.
All the best,
Halvor. -
Can't wait to see how long you can extend your season Stephen. Great video my friend :)

from zone 3 to 5 wow

Good luck with your winter garden Stephen! From the sounds of it, I didn't get my winter seed planted quick enough, but I'm going to try anyhow with some radishes, spinach, and lettuce I'm planting on the weekend. I ran out of my greenhouse budget before I could get my raised bed in there, but I think if I put them in pots inside the greenhouse under a small greenhouse tent, they will do well enough. I guess only time will tell!

Meticulous planning Stephen. I hope you get food right through till spring :)

Hoop coverings will do it for sure, I've used them. Looking forward to seeing yours this year.

It's time to start thinking about our fall and winter gardens. This year we are going to garden into the winter using a few simple season extending methods ! Check them out.

Stephen, I look forward to seeing how long you can extend your season into the fall and winter in zone 3. I won't be surprised if spinach, mache, and miner's lettuce make it all the way through the winter. You should also have a great harvest in early spring when they put on new growth. Best wishes with your fall and winter garden!

All the best & I wish you have all the greens throughout the winter. However, its not the winters that maters to us. Its the heat. Right now, I feel, its like coming out of fire & being on the fry pan. Rains failed once again. We have a micro winter. Cant guess when its coming.
